Stone Carving for Beginners

Stone carving is a fun skill anyone can learn in this 6 day workshop. Instruction will include use of a basic set of tools and a variety of stone carving techniques. There will be demonstrations of every phase of the process and each participant will have personal attention. We will be carving a mortar for a mortar and pestle from a block of limestone. This is a traditional lesson used in professional studios to train beginning stone carvers. Everyone will have the choice to create their own design and surface finish. One block of limestone is included in the fee for the workshop. Each participant should have their own tools and we can supply a tool kit at cost or suggest a list of tool suppliers.

Each day of the class will run 9:00 am to 4:00 pm with a one hour break from 12:00 – 1:00 pm.

IMPORTANT: Safety is a priority! Participants must be at least 16 years old. Everyone must have eye protection (safety glasses) and no open toe shoes allowed. Work shoes or boots are advised. Tool list: 1 stone carving hammer – 1 point – 1 cape chisel – 1 tooth chisel (four or five teeth) – 1 flat chisel (1/2 in. width) Additional tools may be added depending on individual design and finish.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Fred X Brownstein creates contemporary figurative sculpture in marble and bronze. Fred was born in 1946 in Greenville, Mississippi and grew up in Memphis, Tennessee. He attended Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1970 from the San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco, California. In 1971 Fred was an Artist in Residence at the Karolyi Foundation in Vence, France, where he began carving marble and exhibiting his sculpture. Fred married Stella Ehrich in 1974 and the following year the couple moved to Italy where they lived for sixteen years until 1991. In Italy, Fred worked for eight months at Henraux in Querceta and then was accepted as an apprentice at the sculpture studio of Enzo Pasquini where he trained for four years. From 1980-1984 Fred studied figure drawing with the Signorina Nerina Simi in Florence. Fred exhibited with the Grand Central Art Galleries in New York from 1986 -1992. He has completed 12 public sculpture commissions since 1985 and his work is included in private collections in Italy, Canada and the U.S. He has won awards from the National Sculpture Society and the Salamagundi Club in New York as well as national competitions for public sculpture in the U.S. Fred was an adjunct professor at the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts in Connecticut and has lectured at many colleges and museums including the Isabella Stuart Gardner Museum in Boston, The Metropolitan Museum in New York, Alfred University, Middlebury College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College and Williams College, among others. He is a fellow member of the National Sculpture Society and a professional member of the Stone Carvers Guild. Fred lives in Shaftsbury, Vermont.
