Anna Mary Robertson “Grandma” Moses (1860-1961) started painting in her seventies and became one of America’s most famous folk artists. Moses spent most of her life in nearby Eagle Bridge, New York depicting the rural landscape of Washington County. She occasionally painted scenes of Vermont including Bennington (1953) which shows the museum building. In 1972 the museum acquired the schoolhouse in which Moses studied as a little girl along with a collection of objects related to her life, including early needlework, her paint-stained apron and painting table, art supplies, and a large collection of photographs and documents.
