Burt Bros. Store

Around 1893, Job O. Burt and his brother, Sidney A. Burt, founded a men’s clothing store selling everything from suits to sportswear. Around 1900, Burt Brothers moved to a new location at 471 Main Street (now the Village Chocolate Shoppe). Sidney A. Burt retired from the business in 1942, and Job O. Burt retired in 1945. Sidney’s son, Ralph, and Job’s son, Eugene, continued to manage the business until 1978, when it was sold out of the family. The store continued to operate under the Burt Brothers name until 1981, when it finally closed for business. Like many businesses on Main Street, the original building burned down and was replaced by a new storefront with a more contemporary appearance. The commercial building that sits in its place is now home to the Bennington Tutorial Center.
