Perspectives

June 11 through December 31

Maps tell us where we are and help us get where we want to go, but they are more than a tool for travelers. European colonists printed paper maps to claim territory they planned to exploit. Later maps celebrated civic progress and commemorated historic events. Vermont became a tourist destination in the 1900s, and maps became marketing tools to sell the state’s attractions to outsiders. Recent Native artists create maps to reclaim their ancestral ties to the land.
