Haag Circus Parade
The Haag Circus came to Bennington on July 12, 1911. They arrived by train from Manchester in the early hours of the morning and paraded through town to the Morgan lot (where the Bennington Rec Center is now). According to the Bennington Banner, people began to line the curbs for the street parade shortly after nine in the morning and were not disappointed by the bands, musicians, animals, clowns, banners, and horses.
At this time, Bennington was in the midst of a grueling heat wave, but the weather on the day of the circus was fortunately mild. The evening show featured swirls of color, a jovial clown army, and stellar aerial acts.
The building in the background housed S.F. Wood’s Ales and Wines – what is now 128 North Street – and B. Cantor, Cash Groceries.
