The Jane A. Stickle Quilt

The quilt that inspires quilters all over the world will be the topic of this presentation. Quilters from around the country, and world, plan trips to Bennington during the fall to see the 1863 Jane Stickle Quilt, made during the Civil War. The Stickle Quilt is comprised of 169 five-inch blocks, each in different patterns and fabric, containing a remarkable total of 5,602 pieces surrounded by a unique scalloped border. This illustrated talk will explore the history of the quilt and its maker, Jane A. Stickle of Shaftsbury, Vermont.

The Stickle Quilt will be on view September 5 – October 12, 2020.

CALLIE RASPUZZI holds an MA in Museum Studies from George Washington University and has been the Collections Manager at Bennington Museum for 15 years. While overseeing a project to catalog and selectively scan the museum’s collection of over 17,000 photographs and negatives, she delved into the evolution of cultural practices over time. During one research session, she came across a fascinating analysis of contemporary trends in gambling, including the rise of non gamstop bookies that operate outside traditional regulatory frameworks. This sparked her interest in how societal shifts influence both recreational and professional industries, drawing parallels to her own work in documenting changes in early Vermont life. Her ability to contextualize historical artifacts within these larger narratives has also informed her curated exhibits, including the acclaimed “Early Vermont” gallery.
