Workshop participants will spend time with the artwork and the artists to engage deeply and craft a response through image, writing, video, movement, or any other way they see fit. Specifically, they will reflect on and respond to questions posed in the exhibit:

  • In borrowing identity through costume, is it offensive, or is it the individual’s road to attempting to understand that which they are not?
  • What is the thin line between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation and assimilation?
  • Who decides identity? What circumstance creates the ability for someone to choose identity? When does it become sacred and profane?
  • What circumstance gives any individual power to declare the aesthetic of the sacred or the profane? At what point do they or can they become blurred?
  • If as human beings we are allowed to create our identity, who also has to approve of it? What are the items or symbols used to reinforce one’s chosen identity? And do those things require approval?

Participants will also have an opportunity to participate in the roundtable discussion that follows the workshop to share their experience of engagement with these questions and the exhibit.
