Cottage Hotel
The Cottage Hotel was built around 1890 just west of the First National Bank of Bennington (the edge is visible on the far right in this image). The hotel must have been successful as it was enlarged several times before it was demolished in 1920 to make way for the new Bennington Garage. There is a sign for the garage in the left of this photograph. It was originally established by Earl W. Williams in 1913, in a brick livery building behind the Cottage Hotel. In 1914, Williams was selling Dodge, Hudson, Nash, and Saxon cars, and Federal Trucks. The new garage, built in 1920 was substantially larger, and had more visibility from the street. It is now home to a branch of the Community College of Vermont.
