Bennington Museum has partnered with Green Mountain Express (GME) to place a new bus stop at the entrance to the Museum parking lot with service beginning November 1. This stop will be a part of the GME Blue Line and will offer hourly weekday service from approximately 8:30am to 6pm.
GME is a part of the Green Mountain Community Network whose mission is to provide transportation to Bennington County residents. Increasing service and ridership is a major metric for securing grants to help fund this primarily free public bus line.
“The people who live and work in Bennington require easy, reliable access to transportation in order to experience all that this rural region has to offer,” says Martin Mahoney, Executive Director of Bennington Museum. “That includes cultural destinations like Bennington Museum which shouldn’t be limited to only those who have cars,” he continues. “In many ways, our mission dovetails with Green Mountain Express: we want to increase our programs and visitorship in order to secure grants that in turn help to keep our admission cost low. This partnership benefits both of our organizations and the community as a whole and we are so impressed by how quickly and easily GME was able to make this happen.”
Terence White, CEO of Green Mountain Community Network, agrees, “GME is committed to improving access to cultural and educational experiences for all community members, ensuring that no one is left behind in our journey towards a more inclusive community”.
Bennington Museum is currently engaged in Phase 1 of a Capital Campaign to remake the “welcome sequence,” creating a safer and more aesthetically pleasing approach for visitors from parking lot to courtyard to lobby. While the parking lot is under construction this winter and spring, there will be temporary signage affixed near the crosswalk to indicate the bus stop. When the project wraps up by late-May, 2026, there will be a permanent designated area for seating and seating for passengers. From the bus stop, the Museum will be wheelchair accessible and there will also be bike racks nearby.
During this construction period, Bennington Museum will close to the public from January through March, with plans to re-open in April. Regular Museum hours are everyday (except Wednesdays) from 10am to 4pm, open late on summer Fridays.
If community members want to ride the bus to visit the Museum on a Saturday, they can call GME on Friday to schedule a drop-off and pick-up.
Bennington Museum is proud to participate in the Museums for All program offering access for families of all backgrounds to visit museums often and begin their enjoyment of art, history, and innovation. Museums for All is a cooperative initiative between the Association of Children’s Museums (ACM) and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Admission is Free for up to 4 people upon presentation of an EBT card and photo ID. At the Museum, children age 17 and under are always free.
