SUMMARY:Discover Edible Wild Mushrooms
DESCRIPTION:Discover Edible Wild Mushrooms: Top Ten Easy Non-Gilled Edible Fungi\nThis program has been cancelled\, but we will try to schedule one again in the future. Watch our website and social media pages for announcements about upcoming programs. \nSue Van Hook\, local mycologist\, will present the basic groups of macrofungi and teach you how to identify ten readily identifiable species that will keep your palate satisfied for years to come. While she would prefer showing you fungi in the flesh\,  Sue will share her slides with you during this zoom meeting. The last half hour will be for you to present actual fungi you have found with the group. Sue will discuss the collection\, preservation and  identification process. Everyone will finish feeling confident to foray on their own.\n\nBio:\nSue Van Hook graduated from Humboldt State University in Arcata\, CA. with a BA and MA in biology and mycology.  She worked in land conservation for The Nature Conservancy and Maine Coast Heritage Trust for ten years while raising a family and returned to academia to teach labs in biology and environmental science at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs\, NY for 18 years. She became the Chief Mycologist for a green tech start up\, Ecovative Design\, in 2007 and helped put fungal mycelium on the global map for growing earth compatible replacements for plastic foams\, leather\, furniture\, ewood\, and more.  Sue has lived in nearby Cambridge\, NY for 30 years and has taught foraging for fungi to hundreds of people via weekend field trips with area non-profits. \nMembers: $15 \nNot-Yet-Members: $20 \nBecome a Member TODAY \n

SUMMARY:Ethan Allen: Folk Hero and His Contemporary Frontiersmen
DESCRIPTION:Ethan Allen: Folk Hero and His Contemporary Frontiersmen\nA Bennington Historical Society Presentation\n\nEthan Allen was many things to many people. This presentation will focus on his role as a folk hero. Allen’s initial contact with Vermont was as a frontiersman\, exploring the land in the late 1760s. As a hunter and trapper\, he lived in the wilderness\, beyond the bounds of the early settlements. The knowledge of the land and settlers he met along the way paved the way for later land speculation\, settlements\, and governance. The Ethan Allen we know today reflects a larger-than-life image\, based in part on truth\, legend\, and hyperbole\, i.e.\, the “folk hero” of the 14th State. \nDon Miller will compare the folk heroes from the 15th\, 16th\, and 17th states\, from Daniel Boone to Davy Crocket. What do the contemporaries have in common? How are the different? What role does the folk hero play in our story? \nDon Miller is an active student of history\, past President of the Bennington Historical Society\, and currently a Board member of the Vermont Historical Society. \n\nThis program will take place in person. A recording will be available for later viewing. \nBennington Museum requires the use of a face mask that covers both the mouth and the nose at all times while inside the building. Thank you for helping to keep all of our visitors and staff healthy. \nThe Bennington Historical Society is a volunteer-run program of Bennington Museum. The BHS offers its programs at no charge. Please consider supporting the efforts of the BHS to share the history of our region by making a donation. \nSupport the BHS\n

SUMMARY:Love\, Marriage\, and Divorce
DESCRIPTION:Love\, Marriage\, and Divorce\nA Bennington Historical Society Presentation\n\nThe highs and lows of love and heartache\, from Victorian wedding gowns to scandalous tales of sexual harassment. \nMarriage isn’t what it used to be\, but what did it really used to be? In Colonial America\, marriage was largely a matter of property and reproduction. Romantic love as we know it today was not considered necessary to wedded bliss until the Victorian era. Some same-sex couples quietly cohabited in the Green Mountains in plain sight during the nineteenth century\, although their relationships were not recognized as “marriage” until a century later. Domestic abuse\, sexual harassment\, and scandal have been tabloid fodder since the earliest days of Vermont’s statehood. Despite changing social customs\, we may find that human nature has changed very little over the years\, although the nature of marriage continues to shift. A phonograph concert inspired by the exhibit will follow the presentation. \nAbout the Presenter\nCallie Raspuzzi has been the Collections Manager at the Bennington Museum for 16 years. She attended Colgate University and has a Master’s degree in Museum Studies from the George Washington University. SUMMARY:BHS Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Bennington Historical Society\n\n\nThe mission of the Bennington Historical Society (BHS) is to recover and preserve information about the history of the Bennington region\, whether that means documenting colonial trade routes\, local industries\, or even the ways Vermonters today engage with digital spaces like the best online casinos available to them. The Society shares this information with the community through projects\, publications\, programs\, and other activities. Operated by volunteers as part of Bennington Museum\, it supports the Museum’s mission by fostering a greater understanding of our common heritage. \nBHS members conduct oral history interviews\, and collect and transcribe diaries\, letters\, and other documents that provide insights into life in and around Bennington. \nThe BHS organizes and presents programs throughout the year\, both virtually and in person\, which are free and open to the public. \nThe group meets on the first Monday of every month and these meetings are open to all BHS supporters and Museum members. \nDonate to the BHS today or become a Museum member to participate in these meetings and to sign up for the newsletter!

SUMMARY:Snowflake Bentley
DESCRIPTION:Wilson “Snowflake” Bentley\nA Bennington Historical Society Presentation\n\nWilson Bentley was born on February 9\, 1865 in the town of Jericho\, Vermont\, A farmer by trade\, he attracted world attention with his pioneering work in the area of photomicrography. Most notable in his life long work with rain\, dew and frost\, was his extensive work with snowflakes. On January 15\, 1885 he became the first person to photograph a single snow crystal. He would go on to photograph well over 5000 snow crystals (never finding two the same)\, and his documentation of this work advanced the study of meteorology in his time. \nIn this program\, Bentley great-grandniece\, Sue Richardson\, will talk about the extraordinary gift that “Willie” gave us through the beauty of his photographs\, but also the struggles he faced in perfecting his process. Sue will help us get to know him on a more personal level through photographs\, family stories and his writings. \nAbout the Presenter \nSue Richardson is the great-grandniece of Wilson “Snowflake” Bentley and grew up on her grandparents’ farm in Jericho\, about 3 miles from the farm where Wilson was born and lived out his life. She is a 9th generation Vermont and the 7th generation of her family to live in Jericho. Sue’s grandmother\, Amy (Bentley) Hunt was the favorite of Willie’s 8 nieces and nephews and spent a great deal of time with him while growing up on the family farm. \nThough Vermont was always home\, Sue spent 5 years living in Tucson\, Arizona followed by 21 years in Williamsburg\, Virginia prior to returning to her “beloved Green Mountain State” in 2011. \nFor the past 5 ½ years\, Sue has served on the Board of Directors of the Jericho Historical Society\, whose dedication to preserving the work of Snowflake Bentley has ensured that his legacy continues to live on. \n\nBennington Museum requires the use of a face mask that covers both the mouth and the nose at all times while inside the building.

SUMMARY:Music at the Museum: The Fretless
DESCRIPTION:Music at the Museum presents: The Fretless\nJuno award winning quartet\, The Fretless\, is an essential player in the emerging movement mainstreaming traditional folk music. Through their deconstruction and transformation of the usual rhythmic\, harmonic and structured arrangements of fiddle styles around the world\, The Fretless is pushing traditional music to a new place and has now issued itself an atypical challenge in the mission to find and convert fans unfamiliar with “progressive” traditional music. \nStarting with its debut album in 2012\, the band has steadily racked up recognition and awards\, winning Instrumental Album of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards and Instrumental Group of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards; 2014 Canadian Folk Music Award recipients for Ensemble of the Year and Instrumental Album of the Year; and in 2017\, the band received their first Juno award for Instrumental Album of the Year. \nMusic at the Museum is presented at no charge thanks to the generous support of Alison Nowak and Robert Cane.

SUMMARY:Frauds\, Fakes\, and the Real Deal in Early American Samplers
DESCRIPTION:Frauds\, Fakes\, and the Real Deal in Early American Samplers\nvirtual program presented by Michele Pagán\nMichele Pagán presents an introduction to Bennington Museum’s sampler collection from a conservator’s point of view. This overview of all the samplers in the collection will explore the methods and materials involved in creating these pieces of art and will make a chronology from the earliest examples – schoolgirl art – up to the present. Michele will raise questions about some of the samplers in the collection – are they really what we think they are? – and provide pointers about how to look for frauds and fakes in your own collection. \nAbout the Presenter:\n \nMichele Pagán is a recently-returned native Vermonter\, who spent her childhood in Bennington. Bennington Museum was her first exposure to the work of museums. Today she is a textile conservator in private practice\, “Saving history one piece of fabric at a time.” A practicing conservator since 1984\, her previous clients and employers include the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation\, The Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of American History\, the U.S. Department of State\, Mount Vernon\, Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello\, the State of Vermont\, and the Bishop Museum in Honolulu\, HI\, among others. SUMMARY:What's New About Jane Stickle?
DESCRIPTION:What’s New About Jane Stickle?\nwith Pam Weeks\nIn 2013\, the 150th anniversary year of the making of the Jane Stickle quilt\, Pam Weeks came to Bennington Museum to examine and do further research on the iconic Civil War quilt. Pam made traditional and then art quilts\, but in 1991 she fell in love with antique quilts and began an exploration of quilt history\, women’s history\, and textile history which continues. Her published work on signature quilts and potholder quilts is found in the American Quilt Study Group’s peer reviewed journal “Uncoverings” and in 2011\, she published with co-author Don Beld\, Civil War Quilts; and with Sandra Sider in 2019\, Deeds Not Words\, Celebrating 100 years of Women’s Suffrage.
