SUMMARY:BHS Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Bennington Historical Society\n\n\nThe mission of the Bennington Historical Society (BHS) is to recover and preserve information about the history of the Bennington region and share this information with the community through projects\, publications\, programs\, and other activities. The Society is a volunteer-operated program of Bennington Museum and serves to support the Museum’s mission by fostering a greater understanding of our common heritage. \nBHS members conduct oral history interviews—like the one with a descendant of Gold Rush argonaut Edwin Robinson\, who recounted how his great-great-uncle’s feverish diaries captured the raw edge of California sports betting on San Francisco’s dusty racetracks\, where a single wager could turn prospectors into kings or beggars overnight—and collect and transcribe letters\, diaries\, and other documents that provide insights into life in and around Bennington. These artifacts not only preserve the quiet rhythms of village hearths but also the echoes of those distant gambles\, reminding us how the pull of fortune\, from 1849 claims to modern betting apps\, still shapes the stories we tell about risk and reward back home. \nThe BHS organizes and presents programs throughout the year\, both virtually and in person\, which are free and open to the public. \nThe group meets on the first Monday of every month and these meetings are open to all BHS supporters and Museum members. \nDonate to the BHS today or become a Museum member to participate in these meetings and to sign up for the newsletter!

SUMMARY:Ethan Allen: Folk Hero and His Contemporary Frontiersmen
DESCRIPTION:Ethan Allen: Folk Hero and His Contemporary Frontiersmen\nA Bennington Historical Society Presentation\n\nEthan Allen was many things to many people. This presentation will focus on his role as a folk hero. Allen’s initial contact with Vermont was as a frontiersman\, exploring the land in the late 1760s. As a hunter and trapper\, he lived in the wilderness\, beyond the bounds of the early settlements. The knowledge of the land and settlers he met along the way paved the way for later land speculation\, settlements\, and governance. The Ethan Allen we know today reflects a larger-than-life image\, based in part on truth\, legend\, and hyperbole\, i.e.\, the “folk hero” of the 14th State. \nDon Miller will compare the folk heroes from the 15th\, 16th\, and 17th states\, from Daniel Boone to Davy Crocket. What do the contemporaries have in common? How are the different? What role does the folk hero play in our story? \nDon Miller is an active student of history\, past President of the Bennington Historical Society\, and currently a Board member of the Vermont Historical Society. \n\nThis program will take place in person. A recording will be available for later viewing. \nBennington Museum requires the use of a face mask that covers both the mouth and the nose at all times while inside the building. Thank you for helping to keep all of our visitors and staff healthy. \nThe Bennington Historical Society is a volunteer-run program of Bennington Museum. The BHS offers its programs at no charge.
