SUMMARY:Walking Tour of the Old First Church
DESCRIPTION:Walking Tour of the Old First Church\nA Bennington Historical Society Presentation\n\nOn July 11 at 2pm the Bennington Historical Society will present a walking tour of the Old First Church\, “Vermont’s Colonial Shrine” constructed in 1806\, and the adjoining cemetery containing the memorials to many famous local people including governors\, founders of the community and soldiers who fought in the Revolutionary War. The tour will be conducted by Vicky Prinz. Participants should meet at the church a little before 2:00. No registration required. \nAbout the Presenter: \nVicki is a retired CFO of a large dealer group in Troy\, Michigan.  After moving to Bennington\, Vermont in 2003\, she became interested in the region’s historical sites and history.  She started volunteering at Historic Park-McCullough House\, then decided to become a docent at the Old First Church’s Open Church program.  Many of their guests made inquiries of their ancestors buried in the cemetery adjacent to the church. Vicki starting organizing the church’s records and became a taphophile. Vicki has been a trustee of the Bennington Centre Cemetery Association for about 5 years and is currently their acting historian.\nThe Bennington Historical Society is a volunteer-run program of Bennington Museum. SUMMARY:Concerts in the Courtyard: Deena Chappell Trio
DESCRIPTION:CONCERTS IN THE COURTYARD\nEvery summer Friday from June 4 to September 3 (weather permitting)\, Bennington Museum invites you to join us in the courtyard for a bite to eat and some informal entertainment by regional musicians. \nFrom approximately 5pm to 7pm Bennington Museum will host performers in the courtyard\, free of charge. The public is encouraged to bring their own blankets or lawn chairs and to arrive early as the courtyard capacity is limited. \nThe Avocado Pit will set up shop in front of the Museum’s gates\, serving delicious tacos\, beer and wine. Food may be eaten anywhere on the grounds\, and alcohol may be consumed within the gates and other designated areas.  \nKids of all ages will find a fun makerspace in the pavilion to create art based on art and objects featured in the Museum. Activities led by Museum ABCs educators will be provided free of charge with a suggested donation in support of art supplies. \nThe Museum galleries are open until 6pm on Fridays. \nIn the event of rain\, the event will be cancelled by 2pm on Fridays. DESCRIPTION:Reading and Writing Through Frost’s Poems\nwith Camille Guthrie\nThe Robert Frost “At Present in Vermont” exhibit at Bennington Museum presents the poet’s engagement with rural life in South Shaftsbury and how it stimulated his poetry: “Frost was inspired by the local landscape—the apple trees he planted\, the stone walls he admired\, and the fields\, forests\, lakes\, and streams surrounding his Shaftsbury farms.” \nIn this poetry talk and workshop\, we will discuss two of his famous poems about country chores: “After Apple-Picking” and “Mending Wall.” These poems display Frost’s characteristic fidelity to the realism of country life along with his meditations on the imagination. Camille will also provide creative writing exercises that “write through” these poems in order to generate poetry about the interplay between daily human activity and the magic of the gaps\, elves\, games\, and dreams that Frost offers us in his poems. No writing experience is necessary! \nThe workshop will take place in the Museum’s Hadwen Pavilion\, where participants can take inspiration from the Vermont landscape. Her poems have appeared in such journals as At Length\, Boston Review\, The Iowa Review\, The New Republic\, Poem-A-Day\, Tin House\, as well as in several anthologies including the Best of American Poetry 2019 & 2020 (Scribner) and Art & Artists: Poems (Everyman’s Library). The Director of the Undergraduate Writing Initiatives at Bennington College\, she has been awarded fellowships from the MacDowell Colony and the Yaddo Foundation\, and she holds an MFA from Brown University and a BA from Vassar College.

DESCRIPTION:Art at Lunch: Curator’s Choice – The Battle Mural\nwith Bennington Museum Curator\, Jamie Franklin\nThe Battle of Bennington took place on August 16\, 1777. More than 150 years later\, during the Great Depression\, Leroy Williams painted Prisoners Taken at the Battle of Bennington as part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). In this month’s Art at Lunch\, Bennington Museum Curator will talk about the mural in the context of the WPA and about how it documents the diversity of people involved in the 1777 battle. \nAbout the Presenter: \nJamie has been curator at the Bennington Museum since 2005. His scholarship has focused on American art of the early to mid-20th century\, with a particular emphasis on the intersection of modernism and self-taught art. He has organized exhibitions and written books\, essays and articles featuring artists and topics including Erastus Salisbury Field\, Grassroots Art\, Impressionism\, Rockwell Kent\, Anna Mary Robertson Grandma Moses\, and Alice Neel. His 2014 exhibition Alice Neel/Erastus Salisbury Field: Painting the People was recognized by the Wall Street Journal as one of the most memorable exhibitions of the year and his 2016 exhibition Milton Avery’s Vermont  was lauded as being “as close to a perfect show as mere mortals can mount.” \nArt at Lunch: \nSave the date! DESCRIPTION:Manchester Music Festival Young Artists Concert\nEVENT CANCELLED – Please visit the Manchester Music Festival for further information. \nWe are thrilled to present the Young Artists of Manchester Music Festival to the Bennington Museum community of classical music aficionados. \n\nThese talented musicians\, ages 18-26\, will spend the summer honing their craft under the tutelage of MMF’s guest faculty artists as part of their full-scholarship chamber music intensive with the Festival.  This year’s class hail from some of the most prestigious music institutions in the world including Julliard\, Oberlin\, Yale\, and Eastman. \nThe MMF Young Artists Program provides these rising stars the opportunity to study and perform chamber music at a high level\, and to benefit from the outstanding musical guidance that the illustrious artist faculty offer on a daily basis. During their five-week stay with Manchester Music Festival\, students study several chamber masterworks\, receive daily coaching sessions by the faculty artists\, and participate in masterclasses\, in addition to their weekly public performances. \nThe concert is free\, but donations to support the MMF Young Artists Program can be made before or after the concert (cash or check). Check our facebook page for updates. \nKevin McKrell\nSomewhere tonight\, across the country or across the sea\, a singer\, sitting on a stool on a pub’s corner stage\, is belting out a Kevin McKrell song\, and the crowd is singing along. McKrell pioneered Celtic music beginning in 1979 with Donnybrook Fair. The original trio’s 1982 album Tunnel Tigers remains a landmark of the form\, with its blend of Clancy Brothers swagger and upstate NY attitude. McKrell honed his powerful performance style further in the 80s with The Fabulous Newports\, a rambunctious harmony group known as much for its antics\, cut-up comedy and long list of eventual members as for its sweet singing. \nIn 1998\, McKrell—who has three solo albums to his credit—formed a powerhouse band under his own name\, merging the Irish sensibility of Donnybrook with a steely\, world class bluegrass edge. The McKrells toured harder than Donnybrook\, bringing its music\, with McKrell’s lusty vocals supported by hot string band picking\, to Carnegie Hall\, Lincoln Center and festivals and concert venues around the country. He is best known\, though\, for his indelible songs—classics like “Donegal\,” “I Miss the Rain” and the eternal “All of The Hard Days Are Gone”—which\, in addition to the raft of pub singers mentioned afore\, have been sung and recorded by artists like The Kingston Trio\, Bob Shane\, North Sea Gas\, The Furey Brothers\, Seamus Kennedy \,The Druids\, The Dublin City Ramblers \,Wood’s Tea Company and others. DESCRIPTION:CONCERTS IN THE COURTYARD\nEvery summer Friday from June 4 to September 3 (weather permitting)\, Bennington Museum invites you to join us in the courtyard for a bite to eat and some informal entertainment by regional musicians. \nFrom approximately 5:30pm to 7pm Bennington Museum will host performers in the courtyard\, free of charge. The public is encouraged to bring their own blankets or lawn chairs and to arrive early as the courtyard capacity will be limited to 30 total. Visitors are expected to maintain social distance and wear masks when not eating or drinking. \nFrom 5pm to 7pm the Avocado Pit will set up shop in front of the Museum’s gates\, serving delicious tacos\, beer and wine. Food may be eaten anywhere on the grounds\, and alcohol may be consumed within the gates and other designated areas.  \nKids of all ages will find a fun makerspace in the pavilion to create art based on art and objects featured in the Museum. Activities led by Museum ABCs educators will be provided free of charge with a suggested donation in support of art supplies. \nThe Museum galleries are open until 6pm on Fridays. \nIn the event of rain\, the event will be cancelled by 2pm on Fridays. Check our facebook page for updates. \nPATRICK SARGENT MUSIC\nPatrick Sargent was born in Phoenix\, Arizona\, grew up in Concord\, New Hampshire and now resides in Sunderland\, Vermont. An avid lover of music from an early age Patrick started playing music at three years old as well as doing theater and writing novels. After having gone through some ups and downs Patrick dedicated his entire life to music playing original songs and covers. Somewhat of a multi-instrumentalist Patrick plays bass\, drums\, guitar\, and sings. Most known for his guitar skills and unique voice\, Patrick is excited to finish up work with the local Old Mill recording studio and start playing shows this summer!
