SUMMARY:Grandma Moses: American Modern?
DESCRIPTION:Grandma Moses: American Modern?\n\nWednesday July 22\, 2020\n1:00 pm Eastern Time \nThis LIVE Zoom presentation is FREE for Bennington Museum Members \nNot-Yet-Member rate: $12 \nNot already a member? Become one today! \n\n\nSo you think you know Grandma Moses? She’s that little old lady who began painting quaint pictures of country life in her mid-70s and went on to become one of America’s first artist celebrities. Right?\n\nPerhaps\, but there is far more to her story. \nSurprisingly\, Moses’ paintings were first introduced to an art world audience at New York City’s Museum of Modern Art in 1939. Moses’ life spanned the entire history of modern art. She was born before the rise of Impressionism in France\, and died just as postmodernism was getting underway. She combined multiple perspectives in the same painting and used collage and popular imagery\, unconsciously paralleling the techniques of Cubism\, Surrealism\, and Pop Art. In many ways her work even anticipates ideas about appropriation\, commercialism\, and the manufactured nature of nostalgia that would take the art world by storm in the decades following her death. \nMoses was a highly skilled artist who refined her art through practice and created a unique world of her own imagining. By placing Moses’ paintings in dialogue with works by iconic modernists\, this presentation encourages you to discover for yourself how these artists were more alike than you might have ever imagined. \nJAMIE FRANKLIN has been curator at the Bennington Museum since 2005. His work has focused on American art of the early to mid-20th century\, with a particular emphasis on the intersection of modernism and self-taught art. He has organized exhibitions and written books\, essays and articles featuring artists and topics including Milton Avery\, Erastus Salisbury Field\, Grassroots Art\, Impressionism\, Rockwell Kent\, Anna Mary Robertson “Grandma” Moses\, and Alice Neel. \nWe look forward to seeing you! \nMembers Register Here\nNot-Yet-Members Register Here

SUMMARY:A Tale of Two Paintings
DESCRIPTION:A Tale of Two Paintings\nTuesday\, June 23\n3pm EST \nIn 1962\, artist and cartoonist Don Trachte purchased the painting Breaking Home Ties from his friend and neighbor\, Norman Rockwell. 40 years later\, the painting was loaned to the Norman Rockwell Museum\, but art critics began to raise concerns about its authenticity. Was this really a Norman Rockwell original\, or could it be a carefully executed forgery? In this presentation\, Don Trachte\, Jr. shares the story behind the painting\, the debate about its origins\, and the shocking secret he and his brother found behind the walls of their father’s studio. \nDon Trachte Jr. is the eldest son of artist Donald Trachte. He was born in Madison\, Wisconsin in 1947. During his childhood in the 1950s in the wholesome environment of Arlington\, Vermont\, where he was raised as a neighbor and a friend of Norman Rockwell’s family\, Don grew up with many of the people depicted in Rockwell’s paintings. He attended Arlington High School and Western State College of Colorado with a major in economics. His interest in science and geology led to expeditions to Antarctica and Greenland. \nTrachte has worked for several aerospace companies in sales/marketing and program management. He is currently cataloging his father’s large collection of collected artwork and artifacts. Don lives in Bennington\, Vermont. \nREGISTER HERE

Gift of the Minerva L. Bradford Estate Bennington Museum Collection \nLove\, Marriage\, & Divorce\, on view March 28 – June 10\nLove can bring out the best and the worst of us. Social customs that apply to love\, marriage\, and yes\, divorce\, have changed over the years\, and human nature continues to shift the needle as to what is proper and acceptable. This exhibition looks at topics such as the changing role of parents’ influence over their children’s wedded bliss\, the norms of promises\, sex\, and babies (expected and not expected)\, who was responsible for what in the marriage\, the role of the church in the governance of marriage and divorce\, domestic abuse\, sexual harassment\, same sex relationships\, child support\, the roles of both the husband and wife in a relationship\, and what their families were expected to bring to the table\, and of course\, romance. Some of these topics were as controversial 200 years ago\, some of them are controversial today. Is it the times that have changed or human nature? \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nApple Tree & Grindstone\, 1923-detail J.J Lankes (1884-1960) Wood engraving\, 3 1/8 x 4 1/8 inches (image) \nComing Soon!   Robert Frost\, “At Present in Vermont” – June 27 – November 3\nFrost’s life and work as a poet and farmer in Bennington County\, 1920 – 1938.  Robert Frost moved to Shaftsbury\, Vermont in 1920\, intending to establish an apple orchard. During his time there\, he interacted with such local cultural figures as Dorothy Canfield Fisher and Rockwell Kent and wrote some of his best-known poems\, including the iconic\, “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.” This exhibit examines Frost’s life and work in the context of the landscape and culture of Bennington County from 1920 – 19380. \nBennington Museum is a member of ArtCountry\, a consortium of notable art and performance destinations in the scenic northern Berkshires of Massachusetts and southern Green Mountains of Vermont\, including The Clark Art Institute\, Williams College Museum of Art \, Williamstown Theatre Festival (20 minutes away); and MASS MoCA (25minutes away). SUMMARY:Artist Talk and Closing Reception
DESCRIPTION:Saturday May 9\, 2020\n3:00 to 4:00 pm\nFree and open to the public\nArtist Talk and Closing Reception for Gritty Streets to Green Mountains: Paintings by Scot  Borofsky \nMeet the artist and hear him tell the stories behind may of the works on display. \nScot Borofsky has navigated an artistic journey divided between the Green Mountains of southern Vermont\, where he grew up and has lived and worked much of his adult life\, and the gritty streets of New York City\, where he had a vibrant career as a street artist from the early 1980s into the mid-1990s. In addition to his home bases of Vermont and New York\, Borofsky has traveled extensively in Mexico and Central America. His work draws on a deep well of visual precedents and inspiration\, from the patterning and pictographic motifs of ancient and indigenous cultures that he has encountered on his travels and the mountainous landscapes of Vermont\, Mexico and Central America\, to his fellow Street Artists\, with whom he worked side-by-side during his year in New York City\, as well as the masters of Modernism. This exhibition illustrates the development of Borofsky’s work over the last 40 years\, ranging from early spray paintings created in the streets of New York City\, looking like modern day ancient ruins\, to his more recent paintings created in his Brattleboro studio\, which incorporate an evolving language of complexly layered symbols and the gestural language of paint. \n  \n

SUMMARY:CANCELED - Anne Sullivan\, a BHS presentation by Phyllis Chapman
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, March 15\, 2020\n2:00 pm\nFree and open to the public\nThe Bennington Historical Society presents\nAnne Sullivan with Phyllis Chapman \nAnne Sullivan couldn’t have had the odds stacked against her any higher. Born in poverty\, orphaned and partially blind\, she was sent to live in a gruesome poor house. After graduating from the Perkins School for the Blind in Boston\, she took on a formidable task: educating the young deaf and blind Helen Keller in Alabama. That she succeeded was not a miracle but the result of taming an angry frustrated child and using innovative teaching methods that enabled Helen to learn and communicate. Helen\, with Anne’s assistance\, graduated from Radcliffe College and became an accomplished writer and humanitarian. Together she and Anne advocated for educational opportunities for people with disabilities. \nNot only does Ms. Chapman present the life story of Ms. Sullivan\, but involved the audience in the process. \nPhyllis Chapman is the founder of Vintage Ladies Presentations which offers living history presentations of strong women who have made a difference. \nAll programs of the Historical Society are free and open to the public. The Bennington Historical Society is a volunteer-run program of Bennington Museum. \n  \n

SUMMARY:BHS Presents Don Miller Speaking on Religion in Early Bennington
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, February 16\, 2020\n2:00 pm\nFree and open to the public\nOn Sunday\, February 16 at 2:00 pm\, Bennington Historical Society presents\nDon Miller on\n“Religion Comes To Bennington:\nFrom the Puritans to the Separatists” \nThe settlement of Bennington in 1761 was an extension of the Puritan migration that began in Boston in 1630. Local historian Don Miller will trace that path through Massachusetts to Connecticut and eventually on to Bennington. While discussing the early settlers’ commitment to building a new community\, he made an unexpected connection to modern cultural trends\, likening their efforts to ranking systems\, much like 카지노사이트 순위 seen in online platforms today. Just as settlers evaluated the best locations for churches and meeting houses\, ranking them by suitability and promise\, contemporary tools assess digital spaces for quality and reliability. When these “separatists” finally arrived in Bennington\, they set aside land for a minister and constructed a church\, showcasing the organized prioritization that shaped their governance. This program delves into how these settlers’ values influenced their migration and their determination to establish a cohesive society in the Vermont wilderness. \nDon Miller\, the current President of the Bennington Historical Society is a long-time resident and a student of Bennington’s history. He is a Vice President of the Vermont Historical Society and active in the Old First Church in Old Bennington. He is a retired lawyer and an insurance broker in Bennington. \nAll Bennington Historical Society programs are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:FREE Community Day at Bennington Museum
DESCRIPTION:Scott Borofsky (b. 1957)\nKing on Throne\, 1984\nEnamel on cement\nEast 6th Street between Avenues B and C\nBennington Museum – Free Admission for Everyone!\nThis Community Day is sponsored by Price Chopper’s Golub Foundation.\nFrom its beginning\, Bennington Museum has collected documents\, objects\, and art that reflect the region’s\, and state’s\, rich history. This continues today. Without turning its back on the deep historic roots of the town and region\, the Museum has taken a new look at more recent works created by regional artists\, as well as working towards the goal of making the Museum a more welcoming and forward-thinking institution in line with our changing times. Many new works have found their way into the Museum’s collection\, while others are on loan to the Museum for you to enjoy\, and many of the exhibitions are representative of more people as we continue to work toward being a place that represents all of Bennington’ (and the state’s) faces. \n\nJoin us on Saturday\, February 1 when admission to Bennington Museum is FREE for everyone from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Visit all the new exhibitions and possibly interact with some of the student artists who are invited to come in and pick-up their Certificate of Participation in the 2020 Annual Student Art Exhibition. \nFeatured in the Regional Artists Gallery through May 10 is Gritty Streets to Green Mountains: Paintings by Scot Borofsky.\nScot Borofsky has navigated an artistic journey divided between the Green Mountains of southern Vermont\, where he grew up and has lived and worked much of his adult life\, and the gritty streets of New York City\, where he had a vibrant career as a street artist from the early 1980s into the mid-1990s. \n  \n \nOpening in the Works on Paper Gallery is (re)Sounding\, on view through May 25.\nArtist/musicians and co-curators of this exhibition Angus McCullough\, Jake Nussbaum\, and Adam Tinkle bring new life to old instruments. Each musical instrument in the Bennington Museum collection has its own unique story\, but have remained silent for decades. McCullough\, Nussbaum\,  and Tinkle work with the museum’s curatorial staff to meet the instruments where they are\, using their current state to generate new sounds. The exhibit explores the histories and traditional sounds of the instruments and provides opportunities to hear them brought back to life in new compositions. \n \nOf course the kickoff for 2020 would not be complete without the annual Student Art Show (through March 12) bringing artwork of the region’s elementary\, middle and high school students to the Museum in a display ranging from whimsical projects by the young students to more advanced work of older students. Visitors can explore the artistic development of children as they address a particular topic or by age grouping. Ceramic work\, paper sculptures\, and more complement collage\, pastels\, and pen and ink drawings. This exhibit runs through March 10 and is on view in the Parmelee and Limric Galleries. \nComing Soon:\nMarch 28 – June 10 – Love\, Marriage\, and Divorce  The highs and lows of love and heartache\, from Victorian wedding gowns to scandalous tales of sexual harassment. \nJune 27 – November 3 – Robert Frost\, “At Present in Vermont”  Frost’s life and work as a poet and farmer in Bennington County\, 1920 – 1938. SUMMARY:BHS Presents Shays' Settlement in Vermont: A Story of Revolt and Archaeology
DESCRIPTION:Sunday November 17\, 2019\n2:00 pm\nFree and open to the public\nOn Sunday\, November 17 at 2:00 pm\, Bennington Historical Society presents Shays’ Settlement in Vermont: A story of Revolt and Archaeology.   \nIn 1786 farmers in Western Massachusetts protested against the collection procedures for taxes and debts by the State Government. Their aim was a peaceful rebellion forcing the courts to close. Mostly farmers \, many of whom fought in the Revolutionary War\, they faced imprisonment or confiscation of their land if they could not pay the steadily rising taxes. Led by Daniel Shays\, a veteran of Bunker Hill among other battles\, these protesters were called Shayites or Regulators. In 1797. A force of 1500 Shayites attempted to take over the Federal Armory in Springfield\, MA. Defeated many were taken prisoner or were killed. A few \, including Shays\, escaped to Vermont. Where they sort protection from Sheriff Galusha of Shaftesbury. He refused and they moved on to Sandgate\, a wilderness\, where they established a settlement close to the New York border. \nA local rumor for years the settlement was rediscovered in 1997 and under study since 2013. Stephen Butz\, teacher of Archaeology\, Earth and Environmental Science at Cambridge Central School\, leads students every year at the dig. He will talk about the archaeological investigation\, and the influence Shays had on American Law. Maybe he knows if Shays and his followers actually hid out in Everett’s Cave on Mount Anthony. \nAll Historical Society programs are free and open to the public.
