DESCRIPTION:We’re sorry. This event has been cancelled. \nJoin BK CISMA (Batten Kill Cooperative Invasive Species Management Association) for a mouth-watering adventure with edible invasive plants! In this family-friendly workshop\, participants will have a chance to learn basic identification of common invasive plants and which ones can be turned into delicious treats. We will also discuss invasive management techniques and share recipes to take home. Come prepared to eat\, learn\, and pull some invasives for the betterment of the local ecosystem! Children are welcome.

SUMMARY:Daisy Turner's Kin
DESCRIPTION:a Bennington Historical Society presentation\nVermont folklorist Jane Beck shares the story of the Turner family\, a multigenerational saga spanning two centuries\, played out across three continents. The saga was related to Jane Beck by Daisy Turner\, who had listened to her father\, Alec Turner\, recount stories of the family past. Her captivating narrative covers the early 19th century British-African trade\, shipwreck\, birth of a biracial child\, slave trading\, enslavement\, plantation life\, escape\, Civil War\, moving north\, battling racism\, buying land and settling on a hilltop in Vermont that became a family center. Daisy also shared her own life story\, a powerful and rare account of the African American experience in New England from the 1880s forward. \nJane Beck founded the Vermont Folklife Center in 1983 and served as its executive director until 2007. During that time\, she traveled the back roads of Vermont recording oral interviews of everyday Vermonters\, capturing stories that ranged from dairy farming to family traditions\, and even memories of relatives who had discovered casinos not on gamstop while living abroad. She turned those accounts into media productions\, exhibitions\, and publications. In retirement\, she has completed a book\, Daisy Turner’s Kin\, an African American Family Saga\, based on sixty interviews with the daughter of slaves. \nThe Bennington Historical Society is a volunteer-run program of Bennington Museum. The BHS offers its programs at no charge with support from Nexus Consulting. SUMMARY:Michael Finckel: Vermont Composes
DESCRIPTION:Music at the Museum presents “Vermont Composes” with Michael Finckel\nYoshiko Sato (piano)\, Nathaniel Parke (cello)\, and Michael Wimberly (percussion) join cellist Michael Finckel in a celebration of Vermont composition. Featured composers include Louis Calabro\, Michael Finckel\, Derrick Jordan\, Lionel Nowak\, and Allen Shawn. \nMichael Finckel enjoys a wide-ranging career as cellist\, conductor\, teacher and composer. A founding member of the Trio of the Americas and the Cabrini Quartet\, he performs as soloist and chamber musician throughout the U.S. and with members of his family in the renowned Finckel Cello Quartet. His interest in contemporary music has involved him in performances with New York’s leading new music ensembles including Speculum Musicae\, Ensemble Sospeso\, Columbia Symphonietta\, the Group for Contemporary Music\, Steve Reich and Musicians\, and the American Composers Orchestra\, as well as performances with members of the New York Philharmonic\, under the direction of Pierre Boulez and Leonard Bernstein. Mr. Finckel has been Music Director of the Sage City Symphony in Vermont since 1982\, and oversees the orchestra’s extensive commissioning program. He is a member of the Hoff-Barthelson faculty\, and is a regular summer faculty member of the Chamber Music Conference and Composer’s Forum of the East (Vermont)\, and the Composers Conference and Chamber Music Center at Wellesley College in Massachusetts.

SUMMARY:Moses Robinson and the Birth of Democracy in Early Vermont
DESCRIPTION:a Bennington Historical Society presentation\nA member of the first family to settle in Bennington\, Moses Robinson served as our town clerk for 20 years\, then as governor\, then Vermont’s first U.S. senator\, and chief justice of the state Supreme Court. Robert Mello’s biography of Robinson is one of Vermont’s most important. Mr. Mello will discuss Robinson’s role in promoting democracy\, the sanctity of the rule of law\, the independence of the courts\, and the inviolability of elections — all subjects of immediate importance today. \nRobert A. Mello has had a life-long fascination with American history and the law\, especially the early history of Vermont. He is a retired Superior Court Judge\, a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers\, and a former trustee of the Vermont Historical Society. He is also the author of two books: Last Stand of the Red Spruce (Island Press\, 1987) and Moses Robinson and the Founding of Vermont (Vermont Historical Society\, 2014). \nThe Bennington Historical Society is a volunteer-run program of Bennington Museum. This evening promises a fresh look at songs from the popular music canons\, peppered with originals. The five-piece “Plus” unit is a full rockin’-rendition of this cherished act\, featuring the finest musicians in the region.

He has shared stage with numerous musical mainstays like CSN & others but his most treasured compliment came from the lips of Pete Seeger following their duet of “No War No More” not long before Pete passed on. Pete simply looked Brotchman in the eyes and said “that’s a goooood song!” \nHe is an eclectic songwriter & performer who entertains as well as communicates. Many of his melodies are infectious. He will touch you with lightweights and may knock you out with substantive songs of conscience. Brotchman’s tunes will make you move\, feel\, think and won’t leave you alone the next day! \nBrotchman\, from Wells\, VT\, is a farmer among other things. Like the ubiquitous insurance ads\, he “knows a thing or two because he’s seen a thing or two”. His songs reflect a life being lived brim-up-full as an outdoor adventurist\, slogging a guitar on his back or other instruments over thousands of miles of mountains or down some of the world’s wildest river rapids as a guide\, stints in logging camps\, merchant marines\, cowboying. More then. More to come tucked up in his hillside homestead in Vermont. Always a passionate teller of tales\, earth protector and singer of songs. Is he a little different? Yup. He’s a little different. But he’s oh so familiar too! Hear him. You decide if he’s got things to say worth the ear space.

SUMMARY:Fabulous Ferns
DESCRIPTION:Lynn Levine \nThis event has been cancelled. \nParticipants will learn skills to help them to identify ferns using Lynn’s book\, Identifying Ferns the Easy Way: A Pocket Guide to Common Ferns in the Northeast\, winner of the 2019 IPNE Informational Nonfiction Book Award. A copy of the book is included in the workshop fee. \nThe first part of the workshop will introduce you to the magical world of ferns. You will begin to learn about the keys to fern identification. For the balance of our time\, we will walk through the Museum’s George Aiken WIldflower Trail and explore the wide variety of ferns growing there. \nSince receiving her masters in 1978\, Lynn Levine has been a consulting forester\, environmental educator and naturalist. She was the first woman consulting forester in the Northeast.  Lynn has created more than a dozen interpretive nature trails\, with her most recent one incorporating an Abenaki perspective. Lynn has worked with children and adults in classrooms and libraries\, and has taken thousands of people into the forest to share her love of nature\, and to spur others to feel the same. She has found that connecting people to the forest through teaching about tracking\, ferns and trees are powerful ways to spark and enhance that bond.  \nIn addition to Identifying Ferns the Easy Way\, Levine has co-authored: Working with Your Woodland: A Landowner’s Guide and Mammal Tracks and Scat: Life-Size Tracking Guide. We played arenas and did several Comedy Central television specials together. I have 250\,000 Facebook fans. My wife has been a professional singer for 40 years as well. We retired here in 2020. These days\, we play at 421 every other Wednesday\, performing both acoustic and electric – classic pop/rock.

DESCRIPTION:Take a tour of the Bennington Center Cemetery with Bennington Museum curator\, Jamie Franklin. \nHave you ever wondered what stories lie in the cemetery behind the Old First Church? This guided tour starts in the Vermont Rocks! exhibition\, where you will learn about Vermont’s 3 state rocks (and frequent headstone materials)\, marble\, granite\, and slate. The tour continues in the Bennington Center Cemetery\, where Jamie will share the stories of some of the people buried there and introduce you to the works of some of the region’s early headstone carvers. \nWear good walking shoes and be prepared for some uphill walking and uneven terrain. We recommend bringing water to drink and applying sunscreen and bug spray.

Sten Isachsen is an acclaimed classical musician who also performs widely on mandolin\, steel string and electric guitars in bluegrass\, Americana and rock bands. Bob Buckley is a sought after bass player throughout the capital region of NY\, adding solid bass and vocals to the trio. Together\, the trio brings decades of experience to the stage for a superb musical event.

This event is sold out. \nJay Craven’s newest film\, “Lost Nation\,” is a Revolutionary War era action drama set in the early upstart Republic of Vermont. \nThe dramatic film stars Irish actor Kevin Ryan (“Copper\,” Harry Wild”) as Vermont founding father and rebel schemer\, Ethan Allen\, who leads resistance to Yorker land claims\, launches an ill-fated attack on British forces in Montreal\, and leads invasions by his Green Mountain Boys into New York strongholds of Guilford and Brattleboro. At every turn\, Allen navigates thick entanglements with allies\, enemies\, and family. \n“Lost Nation’s” parallel story features Kenyan actress Eva Ndachi (“Beautifully Broken”) as Lucy Terry Prince\, whose poem\, “Bars Fight\,” about the 1746 Deerfield Massacre\, is the first known work of African American literature. Terry settled with her family on a Guilford homestead carved out of the forest by her husband\, formerly enslaved farmer\, and frontier transport operator\, Abijah Prince. Prince antagonist\, aspiring Guilford politician John Noyes\, is played by Rob Campbell (“The Crucible\,” “Ethan Frome\,” “The Unforgiven”). \nLike Ethan Allen\, the Princes found themselves caught up in turbulent times and a prospect for land and liberty sought through the American Revolution. Like Allen\, Lucy Prince also upset the status quo in her use of early Vermont’s legal and political systems to persevere through the sometimes-difficult lived experience of her family. Ethan Allen’s Guilford attack took place less than a mile from the Prince homestead. \nLucy Terry Prince (Eva Ndachi) prepares to address the Vermont Governor’s Council in Jay Craven’s new film\, “Lost Nation. \n“Lost Nation” is Craven’s 10th feature film. Kids of all ages will find a fun makerspace at the picnic tables where they can create art based on art and objects featured in the Museum. \nSIRSY\nRecent Review: SIRSY is a singer-songwriter rock band with a soulful\, powerhouse of a lead vocalist (seriously\, wait until you hear Mel sing!) who is also the band’s drummer. Sirsy’s been touring the US for the last 17 years– playing 200 shows per year nationally. The other half of the band is Mel’s hubby Rich – who sounds like 3 guitarists all on his own- on a vintage Rickenbacker guitar. (Rich also plays bass on a pedalboard with his feet while he’s playing guitar). So\, they sound like a high energy full band… but their show is also intimate with heartfelt stories about the songs … and nerdy jokes. They’ve been able to make folks dance\, laugh\, and cry – all in the same show! They really know how to connect with the audience. \nThey’ve had songs on the hit tv show “Shameless” and opened for Brandi Carlile\, Maroon 5\, Train\, Grace Potter\, Joan Jett\, Cheap Trick\, Collective Soul\, Blues Traveler\, Spindoctors\, & many more. Sirsy can also do a stripped-down acoustic show in a ‘listening room setting’ if that’s a better fit. They can also throw in enough covers to fill 3 hours of music as well. And they travel with PA/sound and lights. \nThanks for your time and consideration. DESCRIPTION:CONCERTS IN THE COURTYARD\nWe are pleased to announce that Bennington Museum has received an anonymous grant once more for 2024. Performances will begin June 7th and run through August 30th\, 2024\, and will be free of charge. \nAll events take place from 5-7pm. \nPlease bring your own blankets or lawn chairs! \nThe Avocado Pit will set up shop in front of the Museum’s gates\, serving delicious tacos\, beer and wine. \nIn the event of rain\, the event will be cancelled by 2pm on Fridays. Check our facebook page for updates. \nMuseum educators will provide free children’s activities during Concerts in the Courtyard. Kids of all ages will find a fun makerspace at the picnic tables where they can create art based on art and objects featured in the Museum. \nReese Fulmer & The Carriage House Band\nReese Fulmer & The Carriage House Band challenge the traditional relationship of a songwriter and his band\, with a fluidly rotating cast of top-notch players and a flair for experimentation that combine for a unique and mesmerizing live performance. Her uninhibited voice draws a room of people right to her and her sincere lyrics keep them there. Angelina grew up in a small town developing a deep love for nature and quiet\, both of which feed and inspire her and her music. She has released one full length album\, two EPs\, and four singles. She played a sold-out performance at The Cock ‘n Bull restaurant just this past January and has recorded at the esteemed Village Studios in L.A.\, as well as the Atlantic Records Studio in New York. She is also the 2023 champion of Nippertown’s March Madness\, a local voting-based music competition in Upstate New York.
