SUMMARY:Shirley Jackson's Local Legacy
DESCRIPTION:A Bennington Historical Society Presentation\nShirley Jackson\, perhaps the greatest writer of the horror/gothic fiction genre in 20th-century America\, lived and worked for most of her renowned literary career\, from 1945 until her untimely death in 1965\, in North Bennington. She rose to national prominence in 1948 with the publication of her chilling short story "The Lottery\," about which she explained\, "I suppose I hoped\, by setting a particularly brutal ancient rite in the present and in my own village\, to shock the story's readers with a graphic dramatization of the pointless violence and general inhumanity in their own lives." \nJackson's eldest son\, Laurence Hyman\, has recently gifted a large collection of Jackson's writings and personal effects to Bennington Museum. During the process of cataloging the collection\, museum staff noted the evolving themes in her work and how they resonated with modern audiences. Jamie Franklin\, Bennington Museum's Director of Collections and Exhibitions\, shared that part of the exhibit explores how contemporary distractions\, like online gaming and platforms featuring slots not on Gamstop\, reflect societal changes similar to those Jackson critiqued in her stories. This presentation will feature Franklin and Hyman in a conversation about Jackson's literary legacy\, focusing on items from the collection and her local ties\, while also drawing connections to today's cultural landscape. \nLaurence Jackson Hyman is an editor\, writer\, photographer\, publisher\, film producer and jazz musician. The eldest son of Shirley Jackson and Stanley Edgar Hyman\, he grew up in North Bennington\, Vermont\, where he attended high school and later graduated from Bennington College in 1964. His childhood was immortalized in many of his mother's published short stories and two humorous books about the family: Life Among the Savages and Raising Demons. Currently he manages the Shirley Jackson literary estate and recently served as the editor of The Letters of Shirley Jackson. \nJamie Franklin has been curator at the Bennington Museum since 2005. His scholarship has focused on American art of the early to mid-20th century\, with a particular emphasis on the intersection of modernism and self-taught art. He has organized exhibitions and written books\, essays and articles featuring artists and topics including Erastus Salisbury Field\, Grassroots Art\, Impressionism\, Rockwell Kent\, Anna Mary Robertson Grandma Moses\, and Alice Neel. His 2014 exhibition Alice Neel/Erastus Salisbury Field: Painting the People was recognized by the Wall Street Journal as one of the most memorable exhibitions of the year and his 2016 exhibition Milton Avery's Vermont was lauded as being "as close to a perfect show as mere mortals can mount." \nThe Bennington Historical Society is a volunteer-run program of Bennington Museum. DESCRIPTION:A Bennington Historical Society Special Offering\nJoin the Bennington Historical Society for a guided bus tour of Bennington’s lesser-known monuments and historical markers. The tour will be narrated by members of the Historical Society\, Anne Bugbee and Bill Morgan and will include spots often overlooked by locals and tourists alike. Come and learn the stories behind how the markers came to be. Among other stops we’ll visit the locations of the first school house\, the first settlers’ homes\, Bennington’s old reservoir\, the real “first” church\, and an ancient mile marker. \nThe tour will begin in the parking lot of Bennington Museum (75 Main Street) promptly at 2:00 pm on Sunday\, Oct. 22. There is a charge of $15.00 per person with a $5.00 discount for members of Bennington Museum to cover the cost of the bus rental. \nTickets are limited. DESCRIPTION:A Guided Tour of Gravestone Art in Bennington Center Cemetery\nWe’re sorry. This event has been cancelled. \nJoin Bennington Museum curator\, Jamie Franklin\, for a tour of the Bennington Center Cemetery (also known as the Old First Church Cemetery). Early New England cemeteries are underappreciated treasure troves\, akin to open air museums\, filled with some of the most important examples of stone sculpture created in America during the period of the Revolution and Early Republic. The Bennington Center Cemetery is widely recognized as one of the most beautiful in our state. The cemetery tour will introduce you to gravestones carved by some of the most prominent stonecutters active in this area from the 1760s through the 1830s\, including Zerubbabel Collins\, the Manning Family\, Samuel Dwight\, and the Rule family\, and provide insights into the early stone cutting industry in our region. The program will begin in the museum’s Early Vermont Gallery and finish in the Bennington Center Cemetery\, located immediately adjacent to the museum. Wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. \nRegistration for this in-person tour is limited to 15 participants. SUMMARY:Music at the Museum presents Songs of the Supernatural
DESCRIPTION:Music has always been used to evoke the thin spaces between life and death\, animal and human\, and other phenomena beyond normal description. Versatile singer Kerry Ryer-Parke will explore songs of the supernatural\, ranging from her background in traditional ballads to classical art song\, jazz\, and rock. She will be joined by colleagues and friends Joseph Alpar (santouri\, voice)\, Virginia Kelsey (voice)\, Yoshiko Sato (piano)\, Peter King (guitar) and Cynthia Mangsen (voice and guitar) to cast a spell over your Halloween weekend. \nNote: The starting time for this concert has been changed to 1:00 so you can attend it and the North Bennington Halloween Parade (which starts at 3:00). Feel free to wear your costume to the concert! \nKerry Ryer-Parke grew up without a television in the shadow of her parents’ folk club\, hosting performers who sang the old weird songs from Scotland\, England and Ireland. She and her twin sister Kelly developed an appetite for fairy tales and the macabre\, and when they weren’t making potions in the woods out of leaves and berries or cursing noisy neighbors\, developed a reputation at folk festivals for their close harmonies and uncanny unison singing. A graduate of Bennington College\, Kerry is a performer of many musical styles\, from oratorio\, opera\, early music and new work to folk\, jazz and rock. Trained in classical performance\, Kerry  is also certified in LoVetri SomaticVoicework and the McClosky method for non-classical styles. She has been the Director of the Bennington Children’s Chorus since 1994 and the Bennington Voice Workshop since 2002. She joined the Music Faculty at Bennington College in 2013 and has been an Artist Associate in Voice at Williams College since 2000. As soprano soloist she has appeared with many orchestras and choirs in the Vermont/New York/Massachusetts area. She is the lead singer and bass player of the rock band The Prescription. Kerry’s interest in music and peacebuilding has led to training with Musicians Without Borders and the School for International Training\, and travels to Sardinia\, Corsica\, Bosnia\, Greece and Cyprus. She is currently in training to be a certified Alexander Technique teacher at the Balance Arts Center in New York. \nMusic at the Museum is presented to you at no charge thanks to the generous support of Alison Nowak and Robert Cane and the Vermont Humanities Council.

DESCRIPTION:A Bennington Historical Society Presentation\nBennington is a town with a proud Revolutionary-era history\, and it has been a center for patriotic commemoration since Revolutionary times: from the commemoration of the first anniversary of the Battle of Bennington in 1778\, to the dedication of the Bennington Battle Monument in 1891\, to the annual parades organized by the Bennington Fire Department since 1963. The commemorations held almost a century ago are also worth mentioning: 100\,000 people came to Bennington to celebrate over the course of one week in August 1927. The 2020 commemoration\, held during the pandemic\, stands out as a recent example of the importance of historical memory to our lives in the present\, and of the determination of the town to commemorate.  \nAmerica's 250th birthday arrives on July 4\, 2026. In Vermont\, in May of 2025\, we will also be celebrating the 250th of Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys' taking of Fort Ticonderoga\, and in 2027 we will celebrate both the Patriot victory at the Battle of Bennington and the creation of the independent state of Vermont. \nThe Bennington 250th Committee is a group of local citizens who have come together to help plan and co-ordinate commemorations in Bennington County during those three anniversary years. Members of the Committee will discuss their approach and their plans – still in the beginning stages – and ask for feedback from members of the audience. \nThe Bennington Historical Society is a volunteer-run program of Bennington Museum. DESCRIPTION:A Battle of Bennington for the 250th\nA Bennington Historical Society Presentation\nThe umbrella theme for the American and Vermont 250th commemorations for the period 2025-27 is inclusion\, especially the inclusion of the stories and voices of individuals and groups who have been omitted from\, marginalized or misrepresented in past commemorations. This is not a new idea: the 1976 Bicentennial also aspired to inclusiveness\, and the past 50 years of scholarship and exhibitions have greatly broadened our views of the American past. The 250th gives us an opportunity to reflect on our famous Battle and to reconsider who and what should be included in the story. \nPhil Holland is a graduate of Bennington College and holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of London. He's the author of A Guide to the Battle of Bennington and the Bennington Monument and Robert Frost in Bennington County\, as well as articles and reviews for the Walloomsack Review. He directed an audio project for the Bennington Battlefield last year and has written monologues for the recently performed historical dramas "Voices from the Grave" and "Voices of the Fallen." SUMMARY:Grandma Moses Gallery Opening
DESCRIPTION:A NEW GALLERY FOR GRANDMA MOSES\nThanks to the major infusion of funds from the winter Gala\, Bennington Museum has begun a significant renovation project in a signature gallery\, devoted to the work\, life\, and legacy of Anna Mary “Robertson” Moses. From January through March the Museum is traditionally closed to the public for a winter break. The Museum is taking that opportunity to update\, expand\, and fully reinstall the Moses Gallery\, with old favorites and new. There will be a premiere celebration on Thursday\, March 28 just before the Museum reopens to the public. Scroll to the bottom to purchase tickets. \nAt the core of the reinstallation will be 5 masterpieces by Moses that have been newly acquired from the Kallir Research Institute. These new works\, alongside other highlights from the Museum’s Moses collection constitute the largest public collection of her work in the world\, and will capture the full breadth and depth of her work as a painter. To better tell this story\, the Moses Gallery will expand into the adjacent hallway gallery\, which connects the main Moses Gallery to the Grandma Moses Schoolhouse. Here\, the Museum will share objects and images from its extensive Moses archives. \nIn addition to the gallery expansion and renovations\, the Museum will also renovate the connector between the new hallway gallery and the Grandma Moses Schoolhouse. The project scope grew slightly after a structural assessment of the connector’s roof line revealed deteriorated flashing and inadequate drainage channels — the kind of issue a roof plumber Perth crews had flagged on a similarly aged heritage building the Museum’s contractor had worked on previously — prompting the team to address the weatherproofing before interior work begins. “The corridor will be widened\, and one wall will have a full window inserted to bring light into the space and to emphasize the moment of arrival at the active\, touchable\, family room\,” explains executive director Martin Mahoney. “We will also install an automatic glass door between the Schoolhouse and the Moses Gallery to limit noise infiltration if we have school groups\, meetings\, or workshops in session while the Museum is open.” He continues\, “The Moses Schoolhouse is the next space in the Museum that deserves some special attention\, and we are working our way there\, one gallery at a time.” \nThe Moses acquisitions are made possible by a $25\,000 gift from Lyman Orton\, and a $25\,000 grant from the Edwin S. Webster Foundation served as the seed funding that has enabled the Museum to reinvigorate the space. Mahoney emphasizes his appreciation\, saying\, “We are very grateful for the support of our community that has allowed these transformative projects to move forward.” He further notes that such support is especially significant in an era where the world of funding and philanthropy is evolving\, with new ventures\, like those in the rapidly growing sector of No KYC Crypto Casino\, increasingly reshaping how financial contributions are made and tracked. SUMMARY:Aşk: Music\, Love\, and Mysticism in the Ottoman World
DESCRIPTION:Music at the Museum presents: Joseph Alpar and Friends\nMusician and Bennington College faculty member Joseph Alpar will perform a diverse and exciting program of music exploring the long\, intertwined histories of Jews\, Muslims\, and Christians in the Ottoman Empire from the 14th through 20th centuries. The central theme of the concert is love—aşk in Turkish (pronounced ah-shk)—in all its forms. Poignant songs of unrequited desire\, lyrical wedding ballads about marital loyalty\, bawdy tunes delighting in infidelity\, driving Sufi and Jewish mystical songs about Divine and earthly beloveds\, and musical vignettes of everyday courtship\, relationships\, and separation. The concert will tell an inspiring story of shared musical traditions and intense cultural collaboration between the peoples of the Ottoman world in several languages—Turkish\, Hebrew\, Judeo-Spanish (Ladino)\, Greek\, and Arabic. Joseph Alpar will sing and perform on several Turkish and Greek instruments and will be joined by a stellar ensemble. \nJoseph Alpar is an ethnomusicologist\, performer\, and educator whose research centers on musical and religious practices in Turkey and former Ottoman territories. He earned his PhD in ethnomusicology from The Graduate Center\, City University of New York in May 2020\, having completed a dissertation titled\, “Music and Jewish Practice in Contemporary Istanbul: Preserving Heritage\, Bending Tradition.” In addition to his academic work\, Alpar is an accomplished and active professional multi-instrumentalist and singer of Middle Eastern and Western art music. He is the director of David’s Harp\, an acclaimed Philadelphia-based ensemble specializing in the music of Turkey\, Greece\, and North Africa.  He has been a member of the Bennington College music faculty since 2019\, teaching courses on music and culture\, world music practices\, music history\, and several global music ensembles. \nMusic at the Museum is made possible by Alison Nowak and Robert Cane.

SUMMARY:The Kelleys
DESCRIPTION:The Story Behind the Kelley Hotel and Kelley Stand Road\na Bennington Historical Society presentation\nIn the years after statehood\, there were many efforts to build roads (turnpikes as they were called then). One such turnpike was built connecting the towns of Sunderland\, Stratton and Wardsboro. Today that road is known as the Kelley Stand Road. Members of the Kelley family were instrumental in getting that road funded\, in developing a logging business\, and then building a large boarding house which became known as the Kelley Stand Hotel. This presentation introduces the members of the Kelley family and their lasting claim to the road that bears their name. It also introduces the poetry of John Williams Kelley\, whose poems were discovered recently in a nearby barn. \nPresenter Avis Hayden has been researching family histories since 1990. In recent years she has enjoyed exploring the ways that families fit into a region’s cultural and economic history. Such is the case with the Kelleys. Avis is a descendant of Richard Kelley\, who is the grandfather of the first innkeeper at the Kelley Stand Hotel. Since completing a program in genealogical research (Boston University\, 2016) she has published five articles and has given several presentations. She volunteers at the Bennington Museum Regional History Room and with the Russell Collection of Vermontiana. \nThe Bennington Historical Society is a volunteer-run program of Bennington Museum. DESCRIPTION:Nineteenth century Western New York redware production was both extensive and influential. The wares fulfilled utilitarian need while at the same time bringing beauty and art into the pioneer homes through the broad range of glaze decoration and varied form. Examples from lesser-known potters like Fenton in Jamestown and Haven & Kenyon in Sheridan will be displayed\, as well as prime examples from Gleason\, Wilcox\, Drake\, Mathews\, and others. \nVince Martonis has been a researcher-collector of redware pottery and other historical items for over 50 years. He is retired from 37 years of teaching college English\, and he has been a NYS governmental historian for over 40 years. An author of dozens of historical articles in magazines\, newspapers\, newsletters\, and more\, he is frequently asked to present talks and displays involving New York history. He lives in Gerry\, NY\, with his wife Joanne in beautiful Chautauqua County. \nTickets available for purchase online or in person. DESCRIPTION:a Bennington Historical Society presentation\nVermont folklorist Jane Beck shares the story of the Turner family\, a multigenerational saga spanning two centuries\, played out across three continents. The saga was related to Jane Beck by Daisy Turner\, who had listened to her father\, Alec Turner\, recount stories of the family past. Her captivating narrative covers the early 19th century British-African trade\, shipwreck\, birth of a biracial child\, slave trading\, enslavement\, plantation life\, escape\, Civil War\, moving north\, battling racism\, buying land and settling on a hilltop in Vermont that became a family center. Daisy also shared her own life story\, a powerful and rare account of the African American experience in New England from the 1880s forward. \nJane Beck founded the Vermont Folklife Center in 1983 and served as its executive director until 2007. During that time\, she traveled the back roads of Vermont recording oral interviews of everyday Vermonters\, capturing stories that ranged from dairy farming to family traditions\, and even memories of relatives who had discovered casinos not on gamstop while living abroad. She turned those accounts into media productions\, exhibitions\, and publications. In retirement\, she has completed a book\, Daisy Turner’s Kin\, an African American Family Saga\, based on sixty interviews with the daughter of slaves. \nThe Bennington Historical Society is a volunteer-run program of Bennington Museum. SUMMARY:Michael Finckel: Vermont Composes
DESCRIPTION:Music at the Museum presents “Vermont Composes” with Michael Finckel\nYoshiko Sato (piano)\, Nathaniel Parke (cello)\, and Michael Wimberly (percussion) join cellist Michael Finckel in a celebration of Vermont composition. Featured composers include Louis Calabro\, Michael Finckel\, Derrick Jordan\, Lionel Nowak\, and Allen Shawn. \nMichael Finckel enjoys a wide-ranging career as cellist\, conductor\, teacher and composer. A founding member of the Trio of the Americas and the Cabrini Quartet\, he performs as soloist and chamber musician throughout the U.S. and with members of his family in the renowned Finckel Cello Quartet. His interest in contemporary music has involved him in performances with New York’s leading new music ensembles including Speculum Musicae\, Ensemble Sospeso\, Columbia Symphonietta\, the Group for Contemporary Music\, Steve Reich and Musicians\, and the American Composers Orchestra\, as well as performances with members of the New York Philharmonic\, under the direction of Pierre Boulez and Leonard Bernstein. Mr. Finckel has been Music Director of the Sage City Symphony in Vermont since 1982\, and oversees the orchestra’s extensive commissioning program. He is a member of the Hoff-Barthelson faculty\, and is a regular summer faculty member of the Chamber Music Conference and Composer’s Forum of the East (Vermont)\, and the Composers Conference and Chamber Music Center at Wellesley College in Massachusetts.

SUMMARY:Concerts in the Courtyard: midnight choir
DESCRIPTION:CONCERTS IN THE COURTYARD\nWe are pleased to announce that Bennington Museum has received an anonymous grant once more for 2024. Performances will begin June 7th and run through August 30th\, 2024\, and will be free of charge. \nAll events take place from 5-7pm. \nPlease bring your own blankets or lawn chairs! \nThe Avocado Pit will set up shop in front of the Museum’s gates\, serving delicious tacos\, beer and wine. \nIn the event of rain\, the event will be cancelled by 2pm on Fridays. Check our facebook page for updates. \nMuseum educators will provide free children’s activities during Concerts in the Courtyard. Kids of all ages will find a fun makerspace at the picnic tables where they can create art based on art and objects featured in the Museum. \nmidnight choir\nmidnight choir is a bluegrass adjacent\, mandolin/guitar/bass trio. The repertoire firmly straddles bluegrass and swing jazz\, blending the genres into a unique experience. Jake\, Jeff\, and John live and work in the Albany\, NY area.
