DESCRIPTION:free food\, music\, activities for all ages\, guest speakers\, and hair braiding\nCome visit us at the 2nd annual Juneteenth Community Celebration\, organized by the Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union and held at the SVSU Central Office at 113 Depot Street in Bennington. We will have activities for kids as well as historical information about slavery in Vermont. Callie Raspuzzi\, Bennington Museum’s Collections Manager\, will speak about the history of Juneteenth and about our efforts to learn more about the lives of early Black Benningtonians. \nWhat is Juneteenth?\nJuneteenth is our newest Federal holiday\, but it has been celebrated in African-American communities since 1866\, a year after enslaved people in Galveston\, Texas learned that they were free (two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation). It’s a time to celebrate\, reflect and learn. Everyone in the community is invited to join the fun and learn something new. The event is free\, you can try non Gamstop casino gaming booths\, and there’s free food\, including hot dogs and hamburgers and red velvet cake! \nSee you there!

Performances will begin June 2nd and run through September 8th\, 2023\, and will be free of charge. \nAll events take place from 5-7pm. \nPlease bring your own blankets or lawn chairs! \nThe Avocado Pit will set up shop in front of the Museum’s gates\, serving delicious tacos\, beer and wine. \nIn the event of rain\, the event will be cancelled by 2pm on Fridays. Check our facebook page for updates. \nMuseum educators will provide free children’s activities during Concerts in the Courtyard. Kids of all ages will find a fun makerspace at the picnic tables where they can create art based on art and objects featured in the Museum. \nMade in the Shade\nMade in the Shade is a Jazz/ R&B project whose members have a shared love for American music from the 1920-40s. Based in North Bennington\, the band features Vocals\, Guitar\, Bass\, Drums\, Harmonica and a Horn Section. This 5 piece group will bring to life a vintage songbook exploring timeless themes ranging from love to loss.  Joe Chirchirillo and Lee Paquin are the two leaders of this group. Lee and Joe live very close to each other and have been playing together for about 5 years. Both have been playing music in various bands for many years.

DESCRIPTION:Lucy Prince of Sunderland\, and her Family: The story of an early Black Vermonter\nA Bennington Historical Society Presentation\nNote: The date for this program has been changed from the usual 3rd Sunday to June 25th.\nLucy Terry Prince was born in Africa and brought to the colonies as a slave when she was five years old. When she was 70 years old\, she moved to Sunderland\, Vermont with some of her children. At that time only 0.2% of the people of Bennington County were Black. She struggled to obtain land that she felt was rightfully hers. Eventually many of the townspeople came to accept this loquacious woman\, who is best known as America's first African-American poet. This presentation will cover Lucy's years in Sunderland\, her fight to keep her land\, and stories about her children and grandchildren. \nAvis Hayden has been a hobby genealogist since 1990. After retiring from her career in health care\, she delved deeper into that field\, completing a program in Genealogical Research from Boston University in 2016. She has published five research articles and has presented at the New England Historical and Genealogical Conference. She volunteers at the Bennington Museum Research Library and with the Russell Collection of Vermontiana. \nThe Bennington Historical Society is a volunteer-run program of Bennington Museum. The BHS offers its programs at no charge with support from Williams Financial. You can support the efforts of the BHS to share the history of our region by making a donation.

SUMMARY:Summer Sampler Class for Youth
DESCRIPTION:Summer Sampler Class for Youth\nSaturdays\, July 1 through August 19 for children ages 7 to 17\nIn the 1800s\, needlework was an important part of a girl’s formal education. Girls as young as 7 years old produced needlework samplers that proved their ability to write their letters and numbers and complete different types of stitches. \nThis class offers children and young people a chance to learn the art of needlework samplers\, working at their own pace. Girls and boys ages 7 through 17 are invited to join – no experience required! \nThe class meets every Saturday July 1 through August 19 from 10:00AM to 12:00PM\, in the Grandma Moses Schoolhouse at Bennington Museum. Participants will learn how to use a needle and thread to complete the provided sampler kit. Working in class and on their own throughout the week\, they will see what they can achieve. Each student will submit whatever amount of stitching they have been able to produce at the end of the summer for display in the Schoolhouse in the fall. \nFees are $85 per student for Bennington Museum Members or $100 per student for Not-Yet-Members. Price includes 8 classes and all materials. \nRegistration for this class is now closed.\nLead instructor Michele Pagan is a recently-returned Native Vermonter\, who spent her childhood in Bennington. Bennington Museum was her first exposure to the work of museums. Today she is a textile conservator in private practice\, “saving history one piece of fabric at a time.” She has a particular interest in early American samplers and the stories they can tell us. A practicing conservator since 1984\, her previous clients and employers include the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation\, The Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of American History\, the U.S. Department of State\, Mount Vernon\, Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello\, the State of Vermont\, and the Bishop Museum in Honolulu\, HI\, among others.  She holds a certificate in Museum Education from Tufts University\, and she just completed the Smithsonian Institution’s online certificate for the C3 Framework for Teaching Social Studies. She presently works out of her studio in East Dorset.

The band’s current lineup includes: \n– Bill Ackerbauer (guitar\, harmonica\, fiddle) – Frank DeVer Pullen (bass\, mandolin\, banjo)\n​- Paul Gavry (accordion\, fiddle)\n– Evan Gavry (guitars\, percussion) \nNominated for a Capital Region Eddie Award in 2022\, The Insolent Willies have released two albums (“Five for the Road” and “Mostly Harmless Acoustic Mayhem”)\, and another album of original material is expected to be released in the summer of 2023. \nThe Insolent Willies actively perform year-round at venues around eastern upstate New York and recently made their Vermont debut at Bennington’s Little City Cider Co.

DESCRIPTION:ENCYCLOPEDIA BOTANICA WORKSHOP\n\n\n\nAugust 12\, 1-4PM\n\n\n\nLocal artist Jessica Smith of BOUNDScollective — who spent a formative season apprenticing with a florist in Western Australia\, where the staggering density of native wildflowers trained her eye to read a landscape like a living specimen cabinet — will offer a botanizing journal workshop afternoon (Frost took botanizing walks in the woods with friends and family throughout his life) on the grounds of the Stone House and the George Aiken Wildflower Trail at Bennington Museum\, drawing on a local historic pressed flower collection from the Bennington Museum and flora drawings by Robert Frost’s children as inspiration.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParticipants will receive a notebook as part of the workshop\, and materials will be available for beginning their own Encyclopedia Botanica. Tea and scones (MoonScones!) will also be provided as part of the experience!\n\n\n\nThe workshop begins at the Bennington Museum and ends at the Robert Frost Stone House Museum. Jay brings a creative and positive energy to any musical situation that is impossible to ignore. A gifted drummer from a young age\, Jay has taken that strong sense of rhythm and groove to his songwriting and arrangement. He combines this with a deep connection to bluegrass and other American roots music. \nJay released his first self produced full length record\, Signals & Strengths\, in 2018. The record has received extensive critical acclaim. Jay finished his sophomore opus\, Humans & Mountains\, in 2019. Jay regularly performs across the region solo and with a numbers of ensembles. His unique blend of talents and influences makes him a highly sought after musician. \nJeff Wasbes is a musician and educator. As the founding guitar player for a number of groups throughout the Capital District\, Jeff’s technical ability and creativity are notable for band and audience members. As the founding guitarist in Blind Crow\, a progressive bluegrass quartet\, Jeff has performed throughout the region and beyond\, including at Saratoga’s Caffe Lena and Darryl’s House in Pawling\, New York. You can hear Jeff’s performance and compositions on Blind Crow’s “Forgo The Balance”\, the band’s 10 track self-produced EP. Jeff continues work in his home studio on his first solo record\, due out in 2022.

SUMMARY:The Many Meanings of Maple
DESCRIPTION:This presentation examines the many meanings of maple sugaring. Maple is enormously important to Vermont’s economy\, ecology\, and heritage. Champlain College professor Michael Lange will discuss sugaring ethnographically\, based on over five years of research among sugarmakers all over the state\, to learn from them what sugaring really means to Vermont. \nRather than discussing the practical aspects of sugaring\, such as how to tap a tree or how an evaporator works\, his talk focuses on how and why maple has become so important to Vermont’s identity\, and how and why it helps us shape who we are as Vermonters. \nDr. Michael Lange is a professor of anthropology and folklore at Champlain College in Burlington. He has authored several academic works on cultural identity. His recent work draws on research with sugarmakers across Vermont and includes “Foodie Influence on the Culinary Meanings of Maple Syrup” and “Sweet Bedfellows: Continuity\, Change\, and Terroir in Maple Syrup”. His most recent book\, Meanings of Maple\, is available from the University of Arkansas Press\, Phoenix Books\, and other sources. Meanings of Maple was recently named a Choice “Outstanding Academic Title”. \nThis talk is free\, open to the public\, and accessible to those with disabilities.
