SUMMARY:Women in Wartime Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Heroism takes many forms\, but the bravery\, grit\, and ingenuity embodied by women in wartime receives too little attention\, and often less formal acknowledgement. Bennington Museum’s Women in Wartime Book Club will examine the distinct aspects of women’ s experience during five different US wars\, over the course of four gatherings. The book club will gather on the third Thursday of each month\, and we’ll read five works of fiction or memoir\, dating from the Revolutionary War up through the Vietnam conflict. SUMMARY:The Corkscrew Railroad
DESCRIPTION:a Bennington Historical Society presentation \nPhil Jordan presents a fond look back at the Rutland Railroad’s Chatham SubDivision\, the so-called Corkscrew Railroad\, whose wandering rails and tight\, twisting curves in its traverse of the valley between Bennington\, Vermont and Chatham\, New York earned it its enduring nickname. Built in the 1860s by a speculating railroad tycoon in order to out-maneuver competition\, it was the proverbial back way to New York City commerce. \nPhilip R. Jordan is a native Vermonter and hobbyist photographer who retired from Vermont Magazine as its editor-in-chief and publisher in 2019. He has written books on transportation subjects\, such as Rutland in Color (Morning Sun Books\, 2003)\, has been a columnist for This Old Truck magazine\, and been a contributor to Old Cars Weekly and USA Today. His first novel\, As Crooked as They Come was published in 2021 by Onion River Press. He most recently contributed content to Volume IV of the Vermont Almanac. He lives in Sunderland\, Vermont with his wife\, Edie\, and is a member of the League of Vermont Writers. \nsupported by

SUMMARY:A Stranger in the Kingdom
DESCRIPTION:Bennington Museum presents a special screening of Jay Craven’s award-winning 1997 film\, “A STRANGER IN THE KINGDOM\,” based on the novel by Howard Frank Mosher. The picture stars David Lansbury (Michael Clayton\, Scent of a Woman)\, Martin Sheen (Badlands\, Apocalypse Now)\, Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters\, Oz)\, Henry Gibson (Nashville) and Jean Louisa Kelly (Mr. Holland’s Opus) and will screen at 7pm\, Friday\, September 26th in the Paresky Center at Bennington Museum. Director Craven will introduce the film and lead a post-screen Q & A.  Tickets are available below. \nA STRANGER IN THE KINGDOM tells the story of a small Vermont town whose veneer of peace and tranquility is shattered when a Black minister arrives as the town’s new pastor and\, soon after\, finds himself charged with adultery and the murder of a French Canadian waif passing through town on her way to pursue her Hollywood dream. Young rascal lawyer Charlie Kinneson\, the local favorite son\, tricks the young Canadian girl into town under false pretenses but he decides to defend the minister\, placing himself at odds with family\, friends\, and a vanishing way of life. The film – and Mosher’s novel – were inspired by the true events surrounding the infamous 1968 “Irasburg Affair.” \nFilm critic John Bowman at the Santa Fe New Mexican wrote that the film ”Conveys the richness you experience in the literature of writers like Faulkner and Eudora Welty. Set in the 1950’s\, “A Stranger in the Kingdom” seamlessly blends rollicking comedy with morally-charged drama and taut suspense. The film is\, by turns\, lyrical and haunting\, hilarious and hard-hitting. Filmmaker Jay Craven revels in the pastoral setting even as he exposes the hypocritical wrinkles in its craggy inhabitants.” \nThe Boston Globe said the film is “Riveting. A delight to see.” \nThe Austin (Texas) Chronicle added that the film is “A delightful reminder that the term “independent” still can say as much about a film’s content as its financing and distribution.” \nRick Kisonik at Seven Days called “Stranger” – “A rollicking powerhouse of a picture.”

SUMMARY:What's in Your Food?
DESCRIPTION:CELEBRATE COMMUNITY AND LEARNING AT THE BENNINGTON RISING PROGRAM \nJoin Bennington College and Mount Anthony Union (MAU) High School students to learn “What’s in your food?” at Bennington Museum on Thursday\, November 20\, from 5:30-7 p.m. This event is the capstone event for the Bennington Rising Program\, a collaboration between Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC)\, the Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union\, and Bennington College. \nThroughout the fall semester\, student teams of Bennington College and MAU high school students have collaborated to research and answer the question: What chemicals are in our food\, and why? Students explored the impact of certain trendy foods or supplements on the body. They also explored questions like\, “Why is MSG so controversial – should it be?” And “Why is the government putting stuff (iodine\, vitamin D\, and more) in our food?” The student groups share their findings through creative and engaging displays in the Bennington Museum’s “What’s in your food?” exhibit\, which will be the focus of the celebration. \nThe event will also feature a talk from University of Massachusetts Amherst Professor Emeritus\, Thomas Zoeller. Professor Zoeller will guide families through highlights from his research about the effects of plastic packaging of food on human health. This talk will be followed by a Q&A session. \nThe event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. \nWant more time to digest the exhibit? The exhibit will be available for viewing with admission to Bennington Museum from November 17-28\, 2025.

SUMMARY:The Restoration of the Old First Church
DESCRIPTION:a Bennington Historical Society presentation \nWere you wondering why the top of the Old First Church was on the ground all summer? This presentation will dive into the lantern\, roof\, and bell deck preservation that took place in 2025. SUMMARY:Michael Arnowitt: Piano Panorama
DESCRIPTION:Vermont favorite\, Michael Arnowitt\, returns to the state to perform a piano concert of lively\, evocative\, and emotionally moving music. The program will feature a set of pieces by Debussy\, including his prelude “The Interrupted Serenade” and a piano transcription of the orchestral music to the opening section of La Mer (The Sea). Other highlights of the program include music from the piano sonatas of the great Black American composer George Walker; Olivier Messiaen’s “The Reed Warbler\,” an excerpt from the composer’s Catalogue d’oiseaux (Catalog of Birds) evoking scenes of nature and bird song; music by Prokofiev composed during World War II; and the exciting finale to Bartok’s Piano Sonata\, a spirited piece influenced by the folk melodies and rhythms of Bartok’s native Hungary. Arnowitt will also perform music from recent decades by composers from the UK\, Ukraine\, and Canada\, and his own Bach-influenced composition “The Stream.” \n Michael Arnowitt lived in central Vermont from 1985 to 2017 when he immigrated to Canada. He now lives primarily in Toronto but also lives part-time in Marshfield\, Vermont. \nMichael Arnowitt is one of today’s most creative musicians. His extraordinary sense of touch at the keyboard\, his abilities to find new articulations and colors from the piano\, and his warm onstage personality have delighted audiences in concert halls around the world. Michael Arnowitt has given seven concert tours of Europe\, performing in France\, Belgium\, Germany\, Holland\, Hungary\, and the Czech Republic\, and he has also given concert tours in Russia and Korea. He is the subject of the documentary film\, Beyond 88 Keys\, filmed in both the USA and Europe and available on Vimeo. He lives in Toronto\, Canada where he moved in 2018 after living in Vermont for over 30 years. \n The Washington Post said of a special piano concert Michael Arnowitt performed at the National Gallery of Art\, “He played with an exquisite sense of touch\, color and musical imagination.” Michael Arnowitt is currently working on a book of essays about music\, What Makes Great Music Great\, to be published by the Vermont-based Fomite Press.  \n In 2017\, Michael Arnowitt was honored with a special legislative resolution by the Vermont House and Senate and a personal thank you in a meeting with the Governor of Vermont in recognition of his years of contributions to Vermont music. His musical activities in Vermont over the years included being the artistic director of the Vermont Millennium Music Festival\, which was a 4-day gala of 24 concerts and special events  presenting music from the year 1000 to the year 2000 in chronological order. During his time in Vermont\, Michael Arnowitt was the principal organizer for a number of major fundraisers to benefit humanitarian aid for Balkan and Syrian war refugees and relief efforts after Vermont hurricanes and floods\, causing the Barre Times-Argus newspaper to comment in an editorial\, “Arnowitt has shown once again that his conscience is every bit as impressive as his cadenzas.” \nMusic at the Museum programs are presented at no charge\, thanks to our generous sponsors\,\nAlison Nowak and Robert Cane.

SUMMARY:The Story of Hiram Bingham
DESCRIPTION:a Bennington Historical Society presentation \nThe remarkable story of the Binghams starts with Hiram Bingham who farmed on the future site of Bennington College in the early 1800s. He and his descendants impacted people and nations around the world. Bingham\, and his son\, grandson\, and great-grandson\, influenced the modern history of Hawaii and other Pacific islands\, the discovery of Machu Picchu in Peru\, politics in Connecticut\, the escape of 2\,500 Jews from Nazi-occupied France\, and a U.S. postage stamp. \nRev. Glen Bayly became interested in the Binghams during the 1990s\, when he was the pastor of the Mission Alliance Church in Bennington. When a missionary from the church came back from Honolulu with a photograph of a plaque honoring Hiram Bingham of Bennington\, Vermont\, Glen’s curiosity was piqued and his research began. Glen served 40 years of ministry as a pastor with the Christian and Missionary Alliance\, was a campus minister at Penn State University for 7 years\, and hosted a syndicated radio program\, ‘The Lions’ Den University Report’ for 22 years. He and his wife\, Darlene\, have lived in Central Pennsylvania for the past 25 years. \nsupported by

SUMMARY:Artillery at the Battle of Bennington
DESCRIPTION:a Bennington Historical Society presentation \nCannons played a small but notable role in the seminal August 16\, 1777 Battle of Bennington. Made in England\, the guns and their carriages constituted top-of-the-line military technology for the time. The men who manned\, loaded\, and fired the pieces were German subsidiary troops hired by the British government to supplement its war effort. Paned by Thomas Jefferson’s propagandistic pen as foreign “mercenaries\,” these Hessians were\, come to find out\, no such thing. In this program\, Eric Schnitzer will examine how the cannons were employed in battle and investigate the material culture of the cannon barrels\, carriages\, and the projectiles they shot. He will also explore the backgrounds and some of the stories of the officers and soldiers from Hessen-Hanau who operated these artillery pieces in both phases of the famed battle. \nEric Schnitzer has worked at Saratoga National Historical Park since 1997\, becoming Park Ranger/Historian in 2000. Author of Don Troiani’s Campaign to Saratoga – 1777\, he has dedicated his life’s study to the organization\, personnel\, and material culture of the military forces associated with the Northern Campaign of 1777. He and his wife\, Jenna\, live in an 18th -century house in the White Creek Historic District near Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site\, N.Y. \nsupported by
