The program consists entirely of premieres of new music by Shawn. \nPiano Sonata No. 6 (2020)\nTwo Fragments for contrabassoon and piano (2020)\nThree Songs (poems by Anna Maria Hong) (2020)\nFour Imaginary Folk-Songs for cello and harp (2018)\nPiano Sonata No. 7 (2020)\n\nMusic at the Museum is presented to you at no charge\, thanks to the support of Alison Nowak and Robert Cane.\nMasks will be required for all audience members for the duration of the event. He started composing music at the age of ten and studied piano with Frances Dillon and Emilie Harris as a teenager. Later he studied composition with Leon Kirchner and Earl Kim at Harvard University\, with Nadia Boulanger in Paris\, and with Jack Beeson at Columbia University. Since 1985 he has lived in Vermont and been on the music faculty of Bennington College. \nShawn’s work list as of 2021 includes a dozen orchestral pieces\, including a Symphony\, two Piano Concertos\, a Violin Concerto\, two Cello Concertos\, an Oboe Concerto\, and a Double Concerto for clarinet and cello; Seven Piano Sonatas and many additional piano pieces\, including several for piano four-hands and two pianos; much chamber music; vocal music; and three chamber operas. His recordings include numerous chamber music CDs; five volumes of piano music\, including a CD devoted to his work by the German pianist\, Julia Bartha; his Piano Concerto performed by Ursula Oppens with the Albany Symphony\, conducted by David Alan Miller; and his chamber opera\, The Music Teacher\, to a libretto by his brother Wallace\, on Bridge Records. He can also be heard on a recent CD of improvisational duos with veteran bassist Michael Bisio\, available on bandcamp. He is currently working on a music-theatre collaboration with Anna Maria Hong\, Jean Randich\, and Sue Rees\, which will be performed at Bennington College in Spring\, 2022. \nAccompanying Allen Shawn for this performance are Thomas Bogden\, Ronald Feldman\, Elizabeth Morse\, and William Safford. \nAbout the Musicians

DESCRIPTION:Bennington Historical Society\n\n\nThe mission of the Bennington Historical Society (BHS) is to recover and preserve information about the history of the Bennington region and share this information with the community through projects\, publications\, programs\, and other activities. The Society is a volunteer-operated program of Bennington Museum and serves to support the Museum’s mission by fostering a greater understanding of our common heritage. \nBHS members conduct oral history interviews—like the one with a descendant of Gold Rush argonaut Edwin Robinson\, who recounted how his great-great-uncle’s feverish diaries captured the raw edge of California sports betting on San Francisco’s dusty racetracks\, where a single wager could turn prospectors into kings or beggars overnight—and collect and transcribe letters\, diaries\, and other documents that provide insights into life in and around Bennington. These artifacts not only preserve the quiet rhythms of village hearths but also the echoes of those distant gambles\, reminding us how the pull of fortune\, from 1849 claims to modern betting apps\, still shapes the stories we tell about risk and reward back home. \nThe BHS organizes and presents programs throughout the year\, both virtually and in person\, which are free and open to the public. \nThe group meets on the first Monday of every month and these meetings are open to all BHS supporters and Museum members. \nDonate to the BHS today or become a Museum member to participate in these meetings and to sign up for the newsletter!

SUMMARY:Stoneware Collectors' Program: George Lent and Sons
DESCRIPTION:Stoneware Collectors’ Program: George Lent and Sons\nBorn in 1774\, George Lent was one of our earliest and most influential American potters. He spent time working in Cornwall\, Albany\, Troy\, Poughkeepsie and Lansingburgh New York. Along the way\, he would help define the upstate New York style that prevailed over the first half of the 19th century. \nThis program will begin with a remembrance of Steve German who passed away on August 1. Steve\, and his wife Lorraine\, proprietors of Mad River Antiques\, LLC\, have coordinated the twice-yearly Stoneware Collectors’ Group events in Bennington since 2009. \nAbout the Presenter \n\nJude Hanley’s new book is coming out someday. Meanwhile\, for the last 10 years\, Jude has been researching the local potteries of Troy\, Lansingburgh and Albany in an attempt to retrieve as much lost to history as he can. Jude is an art teacher going into his 29th year with the North Colonie Central School District. He earned his BFA from Alfred University and a M.S. in Education from Boston University and The College of St. Rose. Jude has recently given talks on stoneware at the Lansingburgh Historical Society\, the Monroe Clayworks\, and the Bennington Museum. \nThere is no charge for this program\, but registration is required. Ray Rodrigues will answer these questions when he discusses the history of Pownal on September 19 at 2:00 PM in the Bennington Museum’s Ada Paresky Education Center. With Wendy Hopkins and Charlotte Comar\, Rodrigues created the Arcadia photo book Images of America: Pownal.  With Dawn Rodrigues\, he edited and up-dated Joe Parks’ history of Pownal\, Pownal—A Town’s Two Hundred Years and More.  \n\nThis program will take place in person. A recording will be available for later viewing. \nBennington Museum strongly encourages the use of face masks while in the building.
