DESCRIPTION:CONCERTS IN THE COURTYARD\nWe are pleased to announce that Bennington Museum has received an anonymous grant once more for 2022\, plus additional support from the Golub Foundation. Performances will begin June 3rd and run through September 2nd\, 2022\, and will be free of charge. \nAll events take place from 5-7pm. \nPlease bring your own blankets or lawn chairs! \nThe Avocado Pit will set up shop in front of the Museum’s gates\, serving delicious tacos\, beer and wine. \nIn the event of rain\, the event will be cancelled by 2pm on Fridays. Check our facebook page for updates. \nMuseum educators will provide free children’s activities during Concerts in the Courtyard. Kids of all ages will find a fun makerspace at the picnic tables where they can create art based on art and objects featured in the Museum. \nLuminous Crush\nLuminous Crush was formed in 2015 by Laura Molinelli and Ben Campbell in Jamaica Vermont. Laura had a career as a singer song writer in the area an in NYC folk clubs\, Ben got his start in the original production of the now Tony award winning Hadestown with an early collaboration with Anais Mitchell. The current band includes Christian Heins on bass from Arlington and Bill Conley on pedal steel and dobro from Dummerston. SUMMARY:A Stopping Stones Commemoration
DESCRIPTION:Margaret (“Peg”) Bowen was born about 1742 in or near Hadley\, Massachusetts. She was enslaved in Bennington by Stephen Fay from 1772 to 1778. On June 25\, 2022\, she will be remembered and honored by the people of Bennington\, Vermont. \nPeg lived and worked at Fay’s Tavern\, better known as the Catamount Tavern\, during some of the most important years of our state’s and our nation’s history. In 1778\, she was sold back to the Massachusetts farm where she’d lived before being sold to Fay. \nRecovering the lost\, discarded\, and sometimes intentionally erased stories of enslaved persons is a challenge. The Stopping Stones project seeks to unearth these stories\, remember the names of the enslaved\, and recognize their contributions to our communities as well as acknowledge and work to repair the legacy of slavery. In October of 2021\, Bennington Museum was awarded a Herbert and Louise Whitney Fund Community Preservation Grant from Historic New England as well as additional support from the Ben & Jerry’s Foundation to support placing a Stopping Stone honoring an enslaved person in Bennington. Since then\, a small group of Museum staff and volunteers has worked to collect information about early Black Bennington residents and to bring their stories to light. \nOn Saturday June 25th the Stopping Stone honoring Peg will be dedicated with a ceremony beginning at 10:00AM at the former site of the Catamount Tavern on Monument Avenue in Bennington\, followed by a reception at Bennington Museum. We invite the community to join us as we share and reflect upon Peg’s story. Guest speakers will include Paul Growald\, founder of the Stopping Stones project; Dr. Lisa Downing-Forget\, physician and Co-Chair of Southern Vermont Health Care’s Diversity\, Equity\, Inclusion and Belonging Committee; and Dr. Alfredo Medina\, Bennington College Vice President for Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion and College Diversity Officer. \nIn the case of rain\, the event will be moved to the Paresky Education Center at Bennington Museum. \nThank you to the trustees of the Village of Old Bennington and the current owners of the property associated with the Catamount Tavern for their support of this project\, and to the volunteers who have worked on uncovering Peg’s story and those of other enslaved people in early Bennington.

Their act promises a fresh look at songs from the rock\, folk & jazz standard canons.

The New Haven based trio is: vocalist and songwriter John “Spigs” Spignesi on guitar\, with Joe Jeffery (bass) and Matt Alling (drums). Together they hang out\, genre-wise\, at the more rocking side of the New England regional Jam Band festival and club gig scene\, and like to consider what they share as “Music For Your Soul.” Since their formation\, the band has released recordings from full studio albums to fun one-off releases like their Halloween take on Edgar Allan Poe’s\, “The Raven.” With hundreds of gigs under their belts\, the band has had breakout performances at Strange Creek Campout\, as well as the iconic Yasgur’s Farm in Bethel NY\, where they celebrated the 50th anniversary of Woodstock. \n[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9GAFayn3UA[/embedyt]

DESCRIPTION:Counterpoint: The Woods and the Waters\na Music at the Museum Concert\nCounterpoint presents a choral program celebrating the landscapes of New England and places much more remote\, with pianist Alison Cerutti. This extraordinary program includes the Prelude to the operetta Paul Bunyan\, by Benjamin Britten; a cantata by American romantic (and New Hampshire native) Amy Beach; and a setting by Joan Szymko of a Hopi text; along with the premiere of a new work by VT/NH composer Travis Ramsey setting lines by Vermont poet Jim Schley; and the premiere of a moving musical setting of passages from Hermann Hesse’s novel Siddhartha by San Francisco composer Jude J. Navari. \nAbout the performer: \nFounded by legendary choral director and arranger Robert De Cormier in 2000\, and based in Montpelier\, Vermont\, Counterpoint is dedicated to performing choral chamber music and engaging with student musicians in Vermont and beyond. \nPraised for their “clarity\, skill” and “sophisticated musical expressiveness\,” the ensemble presents concerts throughout New England and the surrounding region\, and has toured the Midwest. \nCounterpoint has recorded seven CDs with Albany Records and has released four further CDs independently. \nTheir repertory ranges all over the map\, including folksongs from around the world\, African-American spirituals\, sacred music of many traditions\, and concert works by classical composers of the past and our own age. \nMusic at the Museum is presented at no charge thanks to the generous sponsorship of Alison Nowak and Robert Cane.

With a hauntingly beautiful\, lilting soprano and innate sense of melody she crafts tales of songbirds\, sirens and desert nomads – nuanced and layered stories which bridge the gap between past and present. Kids of all ages will find a fun makerspace at the picnic tables where they can create art based on art and objects featured in the Museum. \nThe Outcrops\nFrom the woods of Northern New Jersey\, the Outcrops bring original blues-infused rock’n’roll. The four-piece band was formed in 2016 by lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Cassidy Rain & lead guitarist Bryan Schroeder. As a singer\, Cassidy has been compared to Bonnie Raitt and Susan Tedeschi but her raw sensibility as front person could as easily bring comparisons to blues legends like Howlin Wolf or Muddy Waters. Bryan’s playing falls somewhere between Duane Allman and Derek Trucks\, as many fans have pointed out. Bryan has also noted Jerry Garcia as a major influence. His long flowing lead lines throughout songs intertwine with Cassidy’s vocal phrases to create a very melodic sound that sets the tone for The Outcrops. The rhythm section of the band includes Jason Casanovas on bass and Max Adler on drums. SUMMARY:Manchester Music Festival Young Artists Concert
DESCRIPTION:Manchester Music Festival Young Artists Concert\nWe are pleased to welcome the Young Artists of Manchester Music Festival to the Bennington Museum. \nThese talented musicians\, ages 18-26\, will spend the summer honing their craft under the tutelage of MMF’s guest faculty artists as part of their full-scholarship chamber music intensive with the Festival. This year’s class hail from eight different countries\, and have studied at some of the most prestigious music institutions in the world. \nThe MMF Young Artists Program provides these rising stars the opportunity to study and perform chamber music at a high level\, and to benefit from the outstanding musical guidance that the illustrious artist faculty offer on a daily basis. During their five-week stay with Manchester Music Festival\, students study several chamber masterworks\, receive daily coaching sessions by the faculty artists\, participate in public masterclasses\, and receive private lessons.  \nThe concert is free\, but donations to support the MMF Young Artists Program can be made before or after the concert (cash or check). The performance will take place in the Paresky Wing on the 2nd floor of the Museum. Seating begins at 1:30 and the concert will begin promptly at 2:00. DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to welcome veteran Bennington-based home chef\, Shanta Ghosh to serve her authentic Indian cuisine from the Museum courtyard on Sundays through the summer. \nOrder in person\, or call or email in advance to have your order ready to be picked up. Cash only please. \nView Menu Here \nShanta grew up village cooking with her large household in Nayabasat\, India\, preparing large meals for visitors\, farm workers\, and family. Even though they were cooking for many\, it always felt like a home cooked meal and the hard work paid off with the simple pleasure of seeing people full and happy. What first began as a necessity evolved into something more. \nShanta brought her love of cooking with her to Bennington\, VT where she’s prepared many delicious meals with family and friends. Eventually she decided it was time to share her Corner of India with everybody. If you’ve ever had one of her flavorful dishes\, you’ll very quickly agree it’s a passion worth sharing. Since then\, she’s catered for large clients including The Vermont Arts Exchange\, Powers Market as well as a host of private affairs. When asked why she loves cooking so much\, she shared\, “It’s fun and it feels like I’m doing something good. I love offering food that not everyone has the opportunity to have\, it’s nice to see someone happy with such a simple thing.”

SUMMARY:Concerts in the Courtyard: MOOSE CROSSING
DESCRIPTION:CONCERTS IN THE COURTYARD\nWe are pleased to announce that Bennington Museum has received an anonymous grant once more for 2022\, plus additional support from the Golub Foundation. Performances will begin June 3rd and run through September 2nd\, 2022\, and will be free of charge. \nAll events take place from 5-7pm. \nPlease bring your own blankets or lawn chairs! \nThe Avocado Pit will set up shop in front of the Museum’s gates\, serving delicious tacos\, beer and wine. \nIn the event of rain\, the event will be cancelled by 2pm on Fridays. Check our facebook page for updates. \nMuseum educators will provide free children’s activities during Concerts in the Courtyard. Kids of all ages will find a fun makerspace at the picnic tables where they can create art based on art and objects featured in the Museum. \nMOOSE CROSSING\nZak\, Brian\, Joe and Friends! We play fun music for everyone! We mix music from Frank Sinatra & Miles Davis to the Beatles\, Stevie Wonder\, Bruno Mars\, and More! Performing in New England for over 10 years\, MOOSE CROSSING is the go-to for the music lover of any genre! \nZak Hampton on tenor saxophone brings together a talented group of musical friends from across the region including Brian D’Angelo and Joe Plotts to bring high energy jazz music for any occasion. Performing youthful takes on classics from Duke Ellington and Frank Sinatra\, to Miles Davis and John Coltrane\, MOOSE CROSSING is the go-to group for the jazz connoisseur.
