DESCRIPTION:Meet Me In the Courtyard\nEvery Friday for the month of August (weather permitting)\, Bennington Museum invites you to join us in the courtyard for a bite to eat and some informal entertainment by local creatives. \nFOOD\nFrom 5pm to 8pm the Avocado Pit will set up shop in front of the Museum’s gates\, serving delicious tacos\, beer and wine. Food may be eaten anywhere on the grounds\, and alcohol may be consumed within the gates and other designated areas.  \nAny visitor who purchases food from the Avocado Pit or who presents a receipt from any other Bennington restaurant may enter the Museum for 50% off the price of admission.  The Museum is open until 8pm on Fridays. \nEVENTS\nFrom approximately 5:30pm to 7pm Bennington Museum will host performers in the courtyard\, free of charge. The public is encouraged to bring their own blankets or lawn chairs and to arrive early as the courtyard capacity will be limited to 25 total. \nThe line-up: \nAugust 28: Banulis\, Miller & Green Jazz\nDave Banulis (bass & guitar)\, Gary Miller (vibraphone & MalletKat)\, and Ed Green (cello) perform jazz standards\, contemporary jazz\, plus an extensive repertoire of original jazz compositions by Gary. Improvisation\, interplay\, nuance\, and ensemble playing are key ingredients of the Trio’s sound. BM&G’s home base is Western Massachusetts\, Southern Vermont\, and the Cambridge\, NY area. SUMMARY:Landscapes: Oil Painting and Drawing Workshop with Stella Ehrich
DESCRIPTION:Landscapes: Oil Painting and Drawing Workshop\nInstruction will be given on oil painting and drawing techniques\, how to capture the effects of light and shadow\, aerial perspective\,  linear perspective\, color mixing\, composition\, and more.  Open to artists of all levels from absolute beginners to experienced painters.  This workshop is designed to enhance your powers of observation and develop your innate creative problem solving abilities.  Students will work outside\, on site from 9:30 – 12:00 in the morning and from 2:30 – 5:00 in the afternoon. Individual attention and instruction guaranteed! Casual Meet and Greet Friday evening (5:00 – 6:00) includes admission to the Museum. Students are responsible for supplying their own materials. A materials list will be provided by the instructor. \n  \nABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: \nStella Ehrich lived in Italy for sixteen years\, where she spent seven years studying figurative realism in the atelier of Nera Simi in Florence. She holds an MFA in painting from Bennington College. Popular local DJ “Dr. Paine” will be on hand to provide upbeat ska\, reggae\, and other dancehall favorites for the occasion. \nThe North Bennington Outdoor Sculpture Show (lovingly known as NBOSS-pronounced “N”-Boss) has been one of the premiere arts event of the summer/fall season in our region for the last 23 years. It features work by some of the best artists from southern Vermont and throughout the northeast. This year Bennington Museum has been pleased to host NBOSS at the Museum\, featuring 20 sculptures by 18 artists installed across our beautiful 10-acre property in Old Bennington. Entitled Shaping Space\, the exhibition is presented in coordination with a new monograph on the artist published by Steven Harvey Fine Art Projects. The monograph and the exhibition present work beginning with Rosen’s very early efforts. \nRosen was born in Brooklyn in 1926. His family came from Poland and sold kosher chickens. At the age of 18\, he served in the Navy at the end of World War II\, where he was posted to Japan and China. There he had an experience of “a consuming beauty: mountains coming down into the bay\, foliage\, and Shinto markers.” On the GI Bill he attended the Rhode Island School of Design\, where he studied with Gilbert Franklin and Lyle Perkins. Rosen began to work with clay there and afterwards attended Alfred University College of Ceramics for his MFA. After graduating in 1956\, Lyle Perkins introduced him to Greenwich House Pottery in New York City\, where he took a job as studio manager. At Greenwich House\, Rosen met and traded work with Peter Voulkos. Greenwich House helped prepare him for teaching at Bennington College. Rosen arrived at Bennington in 1960. Rosen found himself at the center of a profound conversation on abstraction with artists present including Anthony Caro\, David Smith\, Kenneth Noland\, Jules Olitski and Paul Feeley. Karen Gover wrote in Ceramics Monthly\, “In some ways\, Rosen’s ceramic sculptures can been seen as a modernist investigation of the relation between medium and form.” \nRosen was an influential teacher of ceramics at Bennington College for 31 years (1960-1991). All the while he was reticent about sharing his work\, even with his students.  In 2017\, at the age of 90\, he had his first solo exhibition at The Bennington Museum titled Holding the Line\, which then travelled to the Alfred Ceramic Art Museum later that year. In October 2017\, SHFAP presented the first recent gallery exhibition of Rosen’s work titled\, Beginnings. New York’s Museum of Art and Design acquired a group of works from the sculptor that were on view in an exhibition titled New Acquisitions in fall of 2017. His work was included in a group exhibition\, Excavation\, at Peter Blum Gallery in 2018. In December 2018\, SHFAP presented Rosen’s work as a solo exhibition as part of the NADA Miami art fair. \nCritical writing about Rosen’s work has appeared in Hyperallergic\, Ceramics Monthly\, and Sculpture Magazine. John Yau of Hyperallergic wrote\, “Rosen’s ceramic sculptures are a revelation: they are like a country that many of us never knew was there until now.” \n  \n  \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Grassroots Art in Vermont: Collecting Non-Mainstream Art at the Bennington Museum
DESCRIPTION:Grassroots Art in Vermont:\nCollecting Non-Mainstream Art at Bennington Museum \nThis roundtable panel discussion will explore the development of a collection of work by self-taught artists working beyond the mainstream art world (at least initially) at a medium-sized regionally focused museum in rural southwestern Vermont. The discussion will be moderated by Jamie Franklin\, Director of Collections and Exhibitions at Bennington Museum\, and will include: Gregg Blasdel\, Ray Materson\, and Kathy Stark (see bios below)\, who have all played a role in the collection’s development. \n\nBennington Museum is known internationally for its collection of paintings by Anna Mary Robertson “Grandma” Moses\, who lived and worked for most of her life just across the Vermont border in New York State. Seeking to provide a broader context for understanding Moses’ work\, who has come to be seen by many as the quintessential example of a 20th-century American artistic autodidact\, in 2013 the museum began to actively collect the work of modern and contemporary grassroots artists with ties to our region\, including Gayleen Aiken\, Paul Humphrey\, Ray Materson and Jessica Park. This program will explore the works of these artists and how and why they came to be added to Bennington Museum’s Collection. \nREGISTER HERE\n  \nBIOS: \nGregg Blasdel is an artist\, collector\, and scholar whose article “The Grass-Roots Artist\,” published in Art in America in 1968\, was one of the first explorations of outdoor environmental installations by self-taught artists\, such as Clarence Schmidt\, Jesse Howard\, and Simon Rodia\, in the mainstream art world. He went on to co-curate Naives and Visionaries at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis in 1974\, which was the first exhibition devoted exclusively to the work by contemporary self-taught artists at a major American museum. He has lived and worked in Burlington\, Vermont\, since the 1970s\, having recently retired as a professor of art at St. Michael’s College in Winooski\, Vermont. Blasdel authored “Paul Humphrey: Art is All I Have” in Raw Vision #35 and “The House of Mirrors: Clarence Schmidt” in Raw Vision #56. \nJamie Franklin has been curator at the Bennington Museum since 2005. His scholarship has focused on American art of the early to mid-20th century\, with a particular emphasis on the intersection of modernism and self-taught art. He has organized exhibitions and written books\, essays and articles featuring artists and topics including Erastus Salisbury Field\, Grassroots Art\, Impressionism\, Rockwell Kent\, Anna Mary Robertson Grandma Moses\, and Alice Neel. His 2014 exhibition Alice Neel/Erastus Salisbury Field: Painting the People was recognized by the Wall Street Journal as one of the most memorable exhibitions of the year and his 2016 exhibition Milton Avery’s Vermont was lauded as being “as close to a perfect show as mere mortals can mount.” \nRaymond Materson is a self-taught artist who began making miniature embroideries (they typically measure no larger than 3 x 2 1/2 inches with up to 1200 stitches per inch and take up to 90 hours or more to create) from unraveled sock thread while he was in prison serving a 15-year term for drug-related offenses. Since getting out of prison Materson has been a vocal advocate for substance abuse education\, becoming the first artist to receive the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Innovators Combating Substance Abuse Award in 2003. From 2009 to 2011 he lived in Vermont\, making a living as a social worker and witnessing the horrors of our state’s opiate addiction crisis first hand. Materson’s embroideries in the Louis-Dreyfuss Collection were shown in a one-man show at Christie’s Auction last January in conjunction with the Outsider Art Fair. He can be reached at materson.r@gmail.com. \nKathy Stark is a full-time artist represented in numerous public and private collections and the Curator/ Exhibition Director of Grassroots Art and Community Effort based out of Hardwick\, Vermont. GRACE\, as it is popularly known\, was founded by artist Don Sunseri in 1975\, making it one of the early progressive studios in the United States. Sunseri\, seeing the creative potential of the residents that surrounded him on a daily basis at the St. Johnsbury Convalescent Center\, where he worked\, started providing opportunities for them to make art\, supplying them with materials\, encouragement\, and a supportive environment—no training or lessons of any sort. Stark has worked with GRACE in various capacities for 20 years\, assisting artists of all ages and abilities to create and share their artwork with the larger world.

The three signature spirits to be tasted include the award winning Barr Hill Gin\, the aged Tom Cat Gin\, and the Barr Hill Vodka which is made from 100% honey. Sam will guide you through the finer points of spirit sampling\, as well as the distilling process\, and the founding of this home-grown Vermont business. DESCRIPTION:Easter Egg Hunt on the Trail\nEaster is early this year\, but that is no reason to stay inside!  Get out and get moving by bringing your kiddos to the Museum for an Easter Egg hunt on Sunday\, April 4.  Our wonderful George Aiken Wildflower Trail Volunteers will have hidden 150 Easter Eggs filled with candy on the Museum grounds\, and you may visit as early as you like on Sunday to begin your hunt*. Bring your own basket\, and don’t forget to wear a mask! \nEaster weekend is also the Museum’s opening weekend\, and the building will be open from 10am to 4pm\, Friday\, Saturday\, Sunday\, and Monday. While you are here\, make sure to stop in and see some of the new exhibits including the Teacher’s Art Show on display in the the Grandma Moses Schoolhouse. Admission for kids is always free. \n*If you come later in the day with your little one\, or if you just can’t find any more eggs\, don’t worry- we will keep a few hidden in the Museum lobby to stave off any potential disappointment!

SUMMARY:Concerts in the Courtyard: Bennington Traditional Jazz Band
DESCRIPTION:CONCERTS IN THE COURTYARD\nEvery summer Friday from June 4 to September 3 (weather permitting)\, Bennington Museum invites you to join us in the courtyard for a bite to eat and some informal entertainment by regional musicians. \nFrom approximately 5pm to 7pm\, Bennington Museum will host performers in the courtyard\, free of charge. The public is encouraged to bring their own blankets or lawn chairs and to arrive early\, as the courtyard capacity will be limited to 30 total. Visitors are expected to maintain social distance and wear masks when not eating or drinking. This unique event\, as seen on Infinity Merge\, has garnered attention for its relaxed yet responsible approach to outdoor gatherings\, ensuring both entertainment and safety. \nThe Avocado Pit will set up shop in front of the Museum’s gates\, serving delicious tacos\, beer and wine. Food may be eaten anywhere on the grounds\, and alcohol may be consumed within the gates and other designated areas.  \nKids of all ages will find a fun makerspace in the pavilion to create art based on art and objects featured in the Museum. Activities led by Museum ABCs educators will be provided free of charge with a suggested donation in support of art supplies. \nThis Friday also coincides with the reception for the Teacher’s Art Show.  Come for music and join us to explore the exhibit with the artists at 5pm!  In honor of the art teachers\, the Museum will offer free admission from 4-6pm on this Friday. \nIn the event of rain\, the event will be cancelled by 2pm on Fridays. Check our facebook page for updates. \nBENNINGTON TRADITIONAL JAZZ BAND\nThe Bennington Traditional Jazz Band plays dixieland\, French-inspired small combo jazz\, and a wide variety of pre-1950 American standards with a high energy\, exciting style perfect for every occasion. With one foot planted firmly in the southern dixieland tradition and the other in the Tin Pan Alley/ American Songbook\, the BTJB presents a dynamic mix of hip\, rhythmic complexity coupled with nostalgic\, old-tyme melodies. DESCRIPTION:Help us keep our 10-acre park in shape! \nA group of dedicated volunteers meets each Saturday morning to keep the George Aiken Wildflower Trail in good condition for public enjoyment. \nVolunteer jobs include weeding out invasives\, planting new native shrubs\, mulching\, clearing fallen limbs\, and setting up trail-side activities for kids. \nWe would love to have you join the team to help show our visitors how beautiful this natural Vermont landscape can be.  Bring a friend\, bring gardening gloves and your favorite equipment.  Jackie Marro\, the lead trail volunteer\, will be on-site bright and early to help direct all efforts. \nLearn more about the GAWT trail and Hadwen Woods HERE. \nWe hope to see you soon\, and thank you!
