DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, July 3rd\, Bennington Museum will celebrate the long-awaited start of the summer season- and we want YOU to be there! \nFOOD\nFrom 5pm to 8pm the Avocado Pit will set up shop in front of the Museum’s gates\, serving delicious tacos. Food may be eaten anywhere on the grounds\, and alcohol may be consumed within the gates and other designated areas. Due to COVID\, the liquor permitting process has been slower than normal and so we do encourage you to BYOB for this event. \nAny visitor who purchases food from the Avocado Pit or who presents a receipt from any other Bennington restaurant may enter the Museum for 50% off the price of admission. \nMUSIC\nFrom 6pm to 7pm Bennington Museum will host The Bennington Traditional Jazz Band (BTJB) in the courtyard\, free of charge. The public is encouraged to bring their own blankets or lawn chairs and to arrive early as the courtyard capacity will be limited to 25 total. \nWith one foot planted firmly in the southern\, dixieland tradition and the other in the Tin Pan Alley/ American Songbook\, the BTJB presents a dynamic mix of hip\, rhythmic complexity coupled with nostalgic\, old-tyme melodies. Perhaps you will find the music is just blended into the environment without recognition. \nJuly 17\, Joe Tucker\nJoe Tucker started his musical career at a choir school for boys in Cambridge\, Mass. In subsequent years\, he taught himself guitar and bass\, leading to a long and varied career in the Boston area and for the last 15 years in Bennington\, Saratoga Springs\, Glens Falls and Lake George. Become one today! \n\n\nSo you think you know Grandma Moses? She’s that little old lady who began painting quaint pictures of country life in her mid-70s and went on to become one of America’s first artist celebrities. Right?\n\nPerhaps\, but there is far more to her story. \nSurprisingly\, Moses’ paintings were first introduced to an art world audience at New York City’s Museum of Modern Art in 1939. Moses’ life spanned the entire history of modern art. She was born before the rise of Impressionism in France\, and died just as postmodernism was getting underway. She combined multiple perspectives in the same painting and used collage and popular imagery\, unconsciously paralleling the techniques of Cubism\, Surrealism\, and Pop Art. In many ways her work even anticipates ideas about appropriation\, commercialism\, and the manufactured nature of nostalgia that would take the art world by storm in the decades following her death. \nMoses was a highly skilled artist who refined her art through practice and created a unique world of her own imagining. By placing Moses’ paintings in dialogue with works by iconic modernists\, this presentation encourages you to discover for yourself how these artists were more alike than you might have ever imagined. \nJAMIE FRANKLIN has been curator at the Bennington Museum since 2005. His work has focused on American art of the early to mid-20th century\, with a particular emphasis on the intersection of modernism and self-taught art. DESCRIPTION:En Plein Air Watercolor Painting Workshop\nSaturday July 25\, 2020\n3:00 – 6:00 pm\n(Rain Date: Saturday August 1) \nSpend a summer afternoon sketching and exploring light on the landscape and townscape in and around Bennington.  In this ‘en plein air’ painting class we’ll spend a few hours using simple techniques and painting concepts to create lovely expressions of a summer afternoon. \nWe’ll make en plein air painting easier than it seems\, by applying some important painting concepts and simplifying our subjects. We’ll also work on expression and using color creatively in our work. \nA list of recommended supplies and materials will be sent to all participants upon registration. Supplies and materials are not included in the registration fee. \nThis class is for intermediate painters with some experience working with watercolors. \nMinimum class size: 6 students. Maximum class size: 12 students. \nAbout the Instructor \n \nTony Conner’s energetic approach to teaching and enthusiasm for the watercolor medium are combined to create classes that are both fun and informative. He excels at providing information and insights to individual students – meeting them where they are and helping them get to where they want to go. \nTony is a Signature Member of both the New England and Vermont Watercolor Societies\, and an Artist Member of the North Shore Arts Association and New York’s venerable Salmagundi club. DESCRIPTION:Revealed: A Century of Women’s Underwear\nA Zoom Lecture Presented by Callie Raspuzzi\, Bennington Museum Collections Manager \nUnseen and unmentionable\, underwear has always been an essential part of a woman’s wardrobe. From restricting corsets to expanding petticoats\, women’s underwear was used to mold the body into a particular shape on which fashionable clothing could be exhibited. How underwear was manufactured changed drastically between 1800 and 1900\, reflecting the American clothing industry in general. Two hundred years ago women made most of their families’ every day clothing at home using locally produced materials. One hundred years later they purchased the majority of their underwear ready-made. Textile mills in Bennington manufactured knit union suits\, undershirts\, long johns and stockings that were sold all over the country. In this Zoom lecture\, (which you can watch while wearing nothing but underwear)\, we invite you to learn about the literal underpinnings of American Society- past and present. \nCALLIE RASPUZZI holds a MA in Museum Studies from George Washington University. She has been the Collections Manager at Bennington Museum for 15 years. She has also curated history themed exhibits for the Museum including the “Early Vermont” gallery. The public is encouraged to bring their own blankets or lawn chairs and to arrive early as the courtyard capacity will be limited to 25 total. \nThe line-up: \nAugust 7: Matt & Megan – Duologues \nMegan & Matt honed their musical collaborations on family holiday mix tapes and gigs in Boston and NYC\, and have taken their music together as far as the Shanghai Jazz Festival — where the backing of digital entertainment sponsors\, including at least one prominent crypto casino online operator that had adopted live jazz as a signature part of its brand experience in Asian markets\, helped fund the international stage on which artists like them now regularly perform. Megan Demarest is a seasoned veteran of the musical theatre and cabaret scenes back east\, while Matt Steckler is a jazz educator and critically-acclaimed performer. SUMMARY:The Battle of Bennington
DESCRIPTION:The Battle of Bennington\nIn the summer of 1777\, an invading army under British General Burgoyne threatened to capture Albany and to isolate New England from the other rebellious colonies. Challenged by the logistics of continuing his advance\, Burgoyne sent a detachment commanded by Lt. Col. Friedrich Baum to procure supplies in a newly independent Vermont. Expecting little in the way of resistance\, Crown Forces instead were delivered a decisive check by General John Stark\, who commanded a collection of Vermont\, Massachusetts and New Hampshire state militias in two fierce engagements. Victory at Bennington paved the way for victory in the Battles of Saratoga and ultimately in the war itself. Historic Site Assistant David Pitlyk will deliver a presentation on the history of the Battle of Bennington\, drawing from contemporary source material and archaeological findings. The presentation will also touch on how the battle has been commemorated and interpreted over time\, both in New York and Vermont. \nAbout the Presenter:\nDavid Pitlyk has served as the Historic Site Assistant for the New York State Office of Parks\, Recreation and Historic Preservation at Bennington Battlefield since 2015. SUMMARY:A Virtual Visit to Park McCullough House
DESCRIPTION:A Virtual Visit to Park McCullough House\nThe new Park-McCullough Director invites the new Bennington Museum Director to the mansion for a private and behind-the-scenes tour! With new energy and collaboration emerging from both institutions\, Chris will start by introducing Joshua to the Halls\, Parks\, and McCullough families before showing him around the beautiful 155 year old Victorian Mansion. Throughout the tour\, both directors will share some of the new effort being made to engage the public\, offer additional programming\, and share various marketing strategies even during this pandemic. As the directors make their way through the mansion\, Chris will take Joshua to parts of the house never before seen by the public including a glimpse of the servants quarters\, a rare look at some of the collection\, and maybe even as far as the cupola!  \nChristopher Oldham is a native of Bennington and a graduate of Mount Anthony Union High School. He attended Castleton University \, where he focused his studies on human services relative to social problems\, cultural diversity\, and communities in American society. Christopher returned to Bennington after college to begin what he describes as a mission to serve his community. At 22\, he ran for a position on the Bennington Select Board and served nine years. He has worked for the Vermont Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing\, United Counseling Services\, and New England Newspapers Inc. He also spent 16 years working with Bennington County Coalition for the Homeless in various capacities\, including five years as the Executive Director. He has served on several community boards including Applegate Housing Inc\, Better Bennington Corporation\, Bennington Free Library\, CareNet Pregnancy Center\, Bennington Rescue Squad\, CAT-TV\, and Bennington Coalition for the Homeless. He currently sits on the Board for Bennington Housing Authority and Bennington Child Advocacy Center. Christopher is a children’s book author and is now the Executive Director of Park-McCullough Historic Governor’s Mansion\, a position he accepted in September 2019 \nBennington Museum has a long history with the McCullough Family. Hall Park McCullough was actively involved with the museum at the beginning\, serving on the board and lending much of his collection. He donated the eagle in the lobby and myriad early VT papers and Battle of Bennington documents. Elizabeth McCullough Johnson\, who donated the Museum her pottery collection\, was the last family member to live in the house\, before it became a historic landmark in the 1960s. \nFollow us on Facebook to catch the live-stream!

Schwartz is a local author who tells stories to explore and illuminate scientific concepts and cultural nuance. She takes a clear-eyed look at global environmental\, economic\, and social challenges\, and finds insights and solutions in natural systems. She writes for numerous publications\, including The American Prospect\, The Guardian\, Discover\, Scientific American\, and YaleE360. Her latest book\, “The Reindeer Chronicles”\, begins right here on Mount Anthony and launches into a global tour of earth repair\, where people are working with nature to heal degraded landscapes. The book invites us to ask: let’s say it is possible to restore the earth. What would that look like? What ecological forces would we seek to activate\, and what knowledge and creativity would be unleashed? With its focus on solutions\, Judy’s work is an antidote to the typically gloomy environmental news beat.  Books will be for sale on this night through the Museum shop (with a chance for an author autograph!)\, and will be for sale thereafter at The Bennington Bookshop\, Battenkill Books and the Northshire Bookstore. \nJoe Tucker started his musical career at a choir school for boys in Cambridge\, Mass. In subsequent years\, he taught himself guitar and bass\, leading to a long and varied career in the Boston area and for the last 15 years in Bennington\, Saratoga Springs\, Glens Falls and Lake George. SUMMARY:Ekphrastic Poetry Writing Workshop with Camille Guthrie
DESCRIPTION:Ekphrastic Poetry Writing Workshop with Camille Guthrie\nJoin nationally recognized poet\, Camille Guthrie\, for an evening of reading and discussing ekphrastic poems. Ekphrasis is a classic genre\, or a literary device\, in which one medium of art describes another to define its essence and reveal its meaning. The first example of ekphrasis is the description of the shield of Achilles from Homer’s Iliad. A very popular genre\, ekphrastic poetry simultaneously enhances its source\, the original artwork\, and takes on a life of its own through its vivid description. In this writing workshop\, we will examine several examples of ekphrastic poetry: poems from John Keats\, Mina Loy\, and Robert Hayden. Participants will be given writing prompts to write ekphrastic poems\, if they like\, based on artworks from the Bennington Museum. \nParticipants will be emailed the poems in advance of the class\, and will be provided with several samples of artwork form Bennington Museum’s collection that may be used as inspiration for the poems\, although writers are also welcome to choose their own.  Completed poems may be emailed to the instructor and with permission may be shared with the rest of the class. \nAbout the instructor: \nCamille Guthrie’s new book Diamonds is forthcoming from BOA Editions in fall 2021. She is the author of three books of poetry: Articulated Lair: Poems for Louise Bourgeois (2013)\, In Captivity (2006)\, and The Master Thief (2000)\, all published by Subpress. Her poems have appeared in such journals as At Length\, Boston Review\, The Iowa Review\, The New Republic\, Poem-A-Day\, Tin House\, as well as in several anthologies including the Best of American Poetry 2019 & 2020 (Scribner) and Art & Artists: Poems (Everyman’s Library). DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Wild Mushrooms – the top ten easy edibles\nSue Van Hook\, local mycologist\, will present the basic groups of macrofungi and teach you how to identify ten readily identifiable species that will keep your palate satisfied for years to come. While she would prefer showing you fungi in the flesh\,  Sue will share her slides with you during this zoom meeting. The last half hour will be for you to present actual fungi you have found with the group. Sue will discuss the collection\, preservation and  identification process. Everyone will finish feeling confident to foray on their own.\n\nBio:\nSue Van Hook graduated from Humboldt State University in Arcata\, CA. with a BA and MA in biology and mycology.  She worked in land conservation for The Nature Conservancy and Maine Coast Heritage Trust for ten years while raising a family and returned to academia to teach labs in biology and environmental science at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs\, NY for 18 years. SUMMARY:Inspiration for the Four Freedoms\, a virtual discussion with Don Trachte
DESCRIPTION:Inspiration for the Four Freedoms\, a virtual discussion with Don Trachte\nNorman Rockwell’s Four Freedoms—Freedom of Speech\, Freedom of Worship\, Freedom from Want\, and Freedom from Fear—were first published in 1943 while the artist was living in Arlington\, Vermont. In this illustrated talk\, Don Trachte\, Jr. (Rockwell’s former neighbor and model) describes the three tragic events that influenced Rockwell’s visual interpretation of Roosevelt’s Four Freedoms speech. \nDON TRACHTE\, JR. is the eldest son of artist Donald Trachte. He was born in Madison\, Wisconsin in 1947. During his childhood in the 1950s in the wholesome environment of Arlington\, Vermont\, where he was raised as a neighbor and a friend of Norman Rockwell’s family\, Don grew up with many of the people depicted in Rockwell’s paintings. He attended Arlington High School and Western State College of Colorado with a major in economics. His interest in science and geology led to expeditions to Antarctica and Greenland.  Trachte has worked for several aerospace companies in sales/marketing and program management. He is currently cataloguing his father’s large collection of artwork and artifacts collected. DESCRIPTION:Meet Me In the Courtyard\nEvery Friday for the month of August (weather permitting)\, Bennington Museum invites you to join us in the courtyard for a bite to eat and some informal entertainment by local creatives. \nFOOD\nFrom 5pm to 8pm the Avocado Pit will set up shop in front of the Museum’s gates\, serving delicious tacos\, beer and wine. Food may be eaten anywhere on the grounds\, and alcohol may be consumed within the gates and other designated areas.  \nAny visitor who purchases food from the Avocado Pit or who presents a receipt from any other Bennington restaurant may enter the Museum for 50% off the price of admission.  The Museum is open until 8pm on Fridays. \nEVENTS\nFrom approximately 5:30pm to 7pm Bennington Museum will host performers in the courtyard\, free of charge. The public is encouraged to bring their own blankets or lawn chairs and to arrive early as the courtyard capacity will be limited to 25 total. \nThe line-up: \nAugust 28: Banulis\, Miller & Green Jazz\nDave Banulis (bass & guitar)\, Gary Miller (vibraphone & MalletKat)\, and Ed Green (cello) perform jazz standards\, contemporary jazz\, plus an extensive repertoire of original jazz compositions by Gary. Improvisation\, interplay\, nuance\, and ensemble playing are key ingredients of the Trio’s sound. BM&G’s home base is Western Massachusetts\, Southern Vermont\, and the Cambridge\, NY area. DESCRIPTION:Landscapes: Oil Painting and Drawing Workshop\nInstruction will be given on oil painting and drawing techniques\, how to capture the effects of light and shadow\, aerial perspective\,  linear perspective\, color mixing\, composition\, and more.  Open to artists of all levels from absolute beginners to experienced painters.  This workshop is designed to enhance your powers of observation and develop your innate creative problem solving abilities.  Students will work outside\, on site from 9:30 – 12:00 in the morning and from 2:30 – 5:00 in the afternoon. Individual attention and instruction guaranteed! Casual Meet and Greet Friday evening (5:00 – 6:00) includes admission to the Museum. Students are responsible for supplying their own materials. A materials list will be provided by the instructor. \n  \nABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: \nStella Ehrich lived in Italy for sixteen years\, where she spent seven years studying figurative realism in the atelier of Nera Simi in Florence. She holds an MFA in painting from Bennington College. It is the largest collection of mounted birds and mammals native to the northeast in the State\, and the foundation of the Museum’s exhibits. DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate the Museum’s first ever collaboration with the North Bennington Outdoor Sculpture Show before the sculptures go away! Between 3 and 5 p.m. on Saturday\, October 24\, come enjoy a PBR (Pabst Blue Ribbon\, an NBOSS tradition\, donations welcomed)\, speak with some of the artists about their work\, and enjoy the glorious autumn season walking amidst the forest\, meadow\, and brook on the museum’s property\, all while encountering engaging public art. Jamaican food will also be available in the Museum’s courtyard courtesy of R & D Island Taste. Popular local DJ “Dr. Paine” will be on hand to provide upbeat ska\, reggae\, and other dancehall favorites for the occasion. \nThe North Bennington Outdoor Sculpture Show (lovingly known as NBOSS-pronounced “N”-Boss) has been one of the premiere arts event of the summer/fall season in our region for the last 23 years. It features work by some of the best artists from southern Vermont and throughout the northeast. This year Bennington Museum has been pleased to host NBOSS at the Museum\, featuring 20 sculptures by 18 artists installed across our beautiful 10-acre property in Old Bennington. The show will be on view through November 2. Come check it out before many of the sculptures begin their winter hibernation. \nThis is an all weather event!
