SUMMARY:Community Day\, Celebrating Art and History
DESCRIPTION:Artist Pat Adams Joins Us for Community Day – Admission FREE! \nOn Saturday\, April 8 from 10 am to 5 pm admission to the Bennington Museum is free for all visitors.  Join us for a day of Celebrating ART as you enjoy Gatherum of Quiddities: Paintings by Pat Adams; Holding the Line: Ceramic Sculpture by Stanley Rosen; Buy Local: Images from the Weichert-Isselhardt Collection\, plus activities both inside the Museum and out on the George Aiken Wildflower Trail.  So much to do for the whole family. \nPat Adams (b. 1928) Voicing\, 1979. Acrylic\, charcoal and grit on paper\, 23 ¾ x 17 ¾ inches. Courtesy of the Artist \nVisit with Artist Pat Adams\nAt 3:00 p.m. Pat Adams greets visitors to her exhibition Gatherum of Quiddities: Paintings by Pat Adams in the Parmelee and Limric Galleries. Modernist abstract painter Pat Adams states the following about her art\, “For sixty years I have approached painting with an empiricist’s concern for the nature of visual form and the intimist’s sensibility that addresses the layering complexity of being.  With abstract paintings characterized by seductive colors and richly encrusted surfaces\, I seek to bring from my “gatherum of quiddities” – that stew of unnamed qualities – a visual situation that bestirs contemplation.”  A fully illustrated catalogue with essays will be available from the Museum Store in mid-May. \nEnjoy Sculpture by Ceramic Artist Stanley Rosen\nHolding the Line: Ceramic Sculpture by Stanley Rosen features works by one of the most dynamic artists working in the medium of ceramics from the late 1950s to today.  By the late 1950s\, Stanley Rosen was in the vanguard of American ceramics. He was one of a small cohort—among them Peter Voulkos\, John Mason\, and Ken Price—who revolutionized ceramics\, making of it an inventive and richly expressi \nStanley Rosen (b. 1926) Untitled\, 1962\, RC 42 Unglazed stoneware\, 16 × 8 × 8 inches Courtesy of the Artist \nve art form\, freeing it  from the practical requirements of vessel making and the conventions of the craft tradition.   From 1960-1991 however\, Rosen focused on his role as teacher at Bennington College and maker\, rarely exhibiting or publishing his unique\, evocative body of abstract ceramic sculptures.  This exhibition and accompanying fully-illustrated catalog with essays and interviews establishes Rosen’s place among the masters of 20th- and 21st- century American ceramics.  Holding the Line: Ceramic Sculpture by Stanley Rosen displays a wide selection of his sculptures and drawings and will be on view through May 21.  This exhibition travels to Alfred Ceramic Art Museum at Alfred University to be on view there October 19 through December 30\, 2017. \nStepping into the Past\nBennington was changing rapidly at the turn of the 19th century and local photographers captured the people and landscape using negatives on thin plates of glass.  The Bennington Museum has acquired nearly 2\,000 glass plate negatives from this era that were held in the Weichert-Isselhardt Collection.  Most of the negatives in this collection were taken by Madison Watson (active in Bennington 1888-1899) and Wills T. White (active in Bennington 1899-1940).  When White retired he left the glass plate negatives in the attic above his former studio located in downtown Bennington.  The building also housed the Bennington Banner and in 1958 the negatives were found by Robert Weichert\, photographer for the Banner.   Weichert started collecting historic photographs and later hired Tordis Isselhardt to help organize the collection.  Upon Weichert’s death in 1983\, Isselhardt became custodian of this treasure trove of history.  All of these images are available on the Museum’s website\, but a selection will be on the walls in the Regional Artists’ Gallery of the Museum during the year. The first phase of this installation is titled Buy Local: Photographs from the Weichert-Isselhardt Collection.  This exhibition pays particular attention to the shops and commerce of Bennington.\nActivities inside and out\nThroughout the day\, hands-on activities for families will be available in the Moses Gallery and in the Schoolhouse. While exploring the creative displays\, several parents exchanged news of a trending social media topic involving a football betting site that pledged a portion of its proceeds to local arts programs. Felt boards and felt pieces will be available to create Moses-style artwork. From 10:00 to 12:00 noon\, try your hand at writing with quill and ink\, and from 1:00 to 4:00 pm celebrate spring by making tissue paper flowers. On the George Aiken Wildflower Trail\, the Children’s Sculpture Garden will make its debut. Jackie Marro\, co-chair of the trail\, will be available to welcome visitors. There will be stump pedestals and flat discs of wood for children and their families to create sculptures\, along with stones\, sticks\, pinecones\, and other natural materials. These sculptures will remain on display in the mulched area. In need of inspiration? Become inspired by the clay stacks of sculptured twigs in the entrance gallery by ceramic artist Stanley Rosen.

SUMMARY:Artist's Reception with Photojournalist Clemens Kalischer
DESCRIPTION:June 3\, 2017\, 3:00 to 5:00 pm\nArtist’s Reception\, Works on Paper Gallery\nBetween Past and Future: Clemens Kalischer’s Vermont \n“I just watch very quietly. I tend to be very quiet. People hardly notice me . . . I tried to take totally candid photographs. When they feel that I am totally absorbed then they get totally absorbed.”  Clemens Kalischer \nBorn in Germany in 1921\, Clemens Kalischer fled with his family to France in 1933 and escaped to the United States in 1942.  A self-taught photographer\, the images that first made his reputation were photographs of fellow refugees arriving in New York after the war\, and graphic\, modernist evocations of streets and buildings. But Kalischer’s heart was not in the city\, and in 1951 he moved to Stockbridge\, Massachusetts.  Here he focused on creating photo essays of the people he had encountered in the rural and urban areas of India\, Israel\, Europe\, the American South\, as well as New England. \nClemens Kalischer (b.1921) Marlboro Music Festival: Van Cliburn and James Levine\, 1956 Silver Gelatin Print\, 11 x 14 inches © Clemens Kalischer Image courtesy of Images Gallery and Studio \nKalischer often came to Vermont seeking material and in this exhibition – Between Past and Future: Clemens Kalischer’s Vermont – the viewer is treated to over thirty images including some taken during six decades of photographing the Marlboro Music Festival with images of  Van Cliburn\, Rudolf Serkin\, Pablo Casals\, among others.  Many are from his Peacham series documenting people in their daily struggles on the land or in the factory.  His Vermont work is deep and varied\, comprising thousands of images traversing more than six decades\, and we are excited to share his work through this exhibition. \nHis work appears in the permanent collections of places such as the Library of Congress\, the International Center of Photography and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He has exhibited at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York City\, the Museum of the Jewish People in Tel Aviv\, and the site of the former Nordhausen concentration camp in Germany near where he grew up.   Between Past and Future: Clemens Kalischer’s Vermont is on view May 27 through September 4. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Community Day with Grandma Moses:American Modern
DESCRIPTION:Join Us for Community Day – Admission FREE!\nOn Saturday\, July 8 from 10 am to 5 pm admission to the Bennington Museum is free for all visitors.  Join us for a day of Celebrating Grandma Moses: American Modern.  Among the many activities planned for you are Grandma Moses: Painter and Grandma\, a presentation from 11:00 am to– 12:00 noon by Ken Gottry\, with special guest\, Harry Moses. \n10:00 – 12:00 noon and 1:00 – 4:00  Milk Benita\, the museum “cow\,” churn butter\, and learn how to make Moses muffins from Granma’s own recipe book. \n11:00  Ken Gottry and Harry L. Moses present Grandma Moses: painter and grandma in the Ada Paresky Education Center.  Grandma Moses was more than a world-famous primitive painter who met President Truman and Eleanor Roosevelt. She was the sparkling little lady who worked hard\, had a quick mind\, and loved her family. In this presentation\, Ken Gottry shows both sides of Moses\, the painter and the grandmother. Ken\, in addition to being a local historian\, married one of Grandma’s great granddaughters so has an exhaustive collection of photos and many stories to share. \n1:00 to 3:00  Will Moses\, great grandson of Grandma Moses\, joins us in the bookstore signing his books and other products. \n1:30  See the Jerome Hill film\, Grandma Moses in the Ada Paresky Education Center \n2:00  View Jane Kallir’s talk\, The Life of Grandma Moses recorded at the 2016 Shelburne Museum Symposium \n3:00 View Jamie Franklin’s talk\, Grandma Moses and Modernism\, recorded at the 2016 Shelburne Msueum Symposium \n4:00 See the Jerome Hill Film\, Grandma Moses \nThere will be Moses-inspired art activities in the Schoolhouse plus “community story-telling.”  If you want to get outdoors\, take a walk on the George Aiken Wildflower Trail where a new Trail Tale has been installed.  Designed for the younger folks\, enjoy “Planting the Wild Garden.” Walk the trail and enjoy stopping at each post for another bit from this wonderful book.  And don’t miss the Children’s Sculpture Garden in the Hadwen Woods. \nGrandma Moses: American Modern \nBennington Museum is home to the largest public collection of paintings by Anna Mary Robertson Moses (1860-1961).  Better known as Grandma Moses\, the artist was catapulted to international fame during the 1940s as the result of her charming\, naïvely executed paintings of rural American farm life.  But she was so much more than a homespun folk hero.  The popular view is that she simply painted scenes remembered from her childhood.  In fact\, she was a highly skilled artist who refined her art through practice and created a unique world of her own imagining.  She combined multiple perspectives in the same painting and used collage and popular imagery\, unconsciously paralleling the techniques of Cubism\, Surrealism\, and Pop Art.  Join us and see Moses through a modernist lens\, as we compare side-by-side Grandma Moses paintings with works by iconic Modernists and folk artists.  You may be surprised. \nGrandma Moses: American Modern is supported by \nBennington Potters and The Bank of Bennington\n  \nMedia Sponsor

SUMMARY:Music at the Museum - Appalachian Harvest
DESCRIPTION:Music at the Museum is pleased to present Appalachian Harvest\, featuring Big Stone Gap who is joined by Alyson Slack on the fiddle and Aaron Pacitti on guitar.  Members of Big Stone Gap include Dave Lawlor on the mandolin; Marc Edwards on guitar; Chris Fisher-Lockhead playing the viola; and Dave Cuite\, bass. \nJust as visual folk artists like Grandma Moses informed and influenced modern artists\, American folk music had its own impact on the future of music.  Appalachian Harvest will begin the concert with traditional anonymous American fiddle tunes and progress through the introduction of bluegrass which was pioneered by Bill Monroe. The performers will then draw from the Western Swing influences of Bob Wills and the correlation of swing and Dixieland as it became incorporated into Appalachian music. The program rounds out with more modern interpretations of the genre as it became more energized through the establishment of rock and roll. \nThe free concert is made possible by Alison Nowak and Robert Cane. Admission to the museum galleries is not included.

SUMMARY:Kicking off the Year Has Never Been Better and it’s FREE
DESCRIPTION:Kicking off the Year Has Never Been Better and it’s FREE!\n\nThe Bennington Museum invites everyone to Community Day on February 3 when admission is FREE and the “Creative Collisions” among the galleries are explosive. Explore the newly installed Grandma Moses Gallery with paintings like Thunderstorm\, 1948\, which has not been at the Museum in over two decades. On loan from a private collector\, this iconic painting enhances the walls of the gallery along with Old Oaken Bucket\, 1946\, which has never been installed at Bennington Museum. “We are thrilled to have such iconic works here at the Museum\,” states Jamie Franklin\, curator at the Museum. “These are joined by other masterworks from the Museum’s collection as well as Deep Snow\, 1959\, and A Christmas Gift\, 1946\, both from the private collection of the Zarnegin family\, Beverly Hills\, California. Any person who admires Moses’ work and wants to get another perspective on what she created\, must be sure to visit in 2018.”\nIn the Regional Artists Gallery located next to the Moses Gallery\, the Museum presents Enthusiasms: Personal Paintings by Jessica Park. This exhibition is on view through May 28 and focuses on a lesser-known aspect of Park’s work\, featuring work created during the first decade of her career as well as more recent paintings from the last decade which were created at the artist’s own initiative for herself or as gifts for family and friends. Park is best known for her depictions of architecture\, though early in her career she often painted whimsical images of electronic gadgets\, signs\, logos\, and characters from popular culture\, all of which still deeply fascinate the artist to this day. These works reflect Park’s personal interests\, or “enthusiasms” as she calls them\, in popular culture\, astronomical phenomenon\, and prismatic lights and color\, natural or man-made\, often configured in tightly controlled grid-like structures. Park’s images depict everyday objects with precise attention paid to the most mundane of details\, along with scientifically accurate illustrations of rare and unusual astronomical phenomenon\, seamlessly brought together into fantastical combinations. This is all done in a brilliant\, carefully calculated color palette and intricate patterning that seems to almost vibrate with energy. \nPark’s work can be found in the Regional Artists Gallery while paintings by Gayleen Aiken are on view in the John T. Harrison\, Jr. Orientation Hall where they are juxtaposed with photographs by Duane Michals in an installation entitled Magic and Mystery. \nOpening the year in the Museum’s Works on Paper Gallery is A Century of Caring on view through May 6. In celebration of the Southwestern Vermont Health Care’s centennial\, this exhibition begins one hundred years ago when Putnam Memorial Hospital opened its doors in Bennington. It features images and objects from the early days of the Hospital up through its most current story. \nExplore the permanent exhibitions including one of the newest galleries Early Vermont. Opened in the fall 2017\, Early Vermont is a permanent installation with rotating textiles\, and presents life in Vermont from the time when the earliest European settlers arrived in 1761 with only the bare necessities to the early 1800s when Vermont craftsmen achieved a level of sophistication rivaling Boston and New York. This gallery showcases over 85 major pieces and smaller items from the Museum’s extensive historical collection of over 30\,000 objects. \nIn the adjacent galleries through March 13 is the Annual Student Art Show bringing artwork of the region’s elementary\, middle and high school students to the Museum in a display ranging from whimsical projects by the young students to more advanced work of older students. SUMMARY:Artist's Reception with Jessica Park
DESCRIPTION:Join artist Jessica Park on Saturday\, February 3 from 2:30 to 4:30 in the Regional Artists Gallery for a reception celebrating her exhibition Enthusiasms: Personal Paintings by Jessica Park. This reception is free and open to the public. \nIn the Regional Artists Gallery located next to the Moses Gallery\, the Museum presents Enthusiasms: Personal Paintings by Jessica Park. \nJessica Park (b. 1958) sees the world through high definition rainbow-colored glasses. A native of Williamstown\, Massachusetts\, she is an internationally-acclaimed artist on the autism spectrum. One of the few things that Park connected with during her early childhood was art\, and she has been a professional artist since the mid-1980s. Her paintings combine extreme technical proficiency with a transcendent\, visionary imagination. \n  \n
