SUMMARY:Community Day\, Celebrating Art and History
DESCRIPTION:Community Day\, Celebrating Art and History –  The Bennington Museum invites everyone to celebrate Community Day on February 4 to explore the permanent\, as well as the changing exhibitions.  Admission is FREE for everyone.  Opening the year one of the main floor galleries is Holding the Line: Ceramic Sculpture by Stanley Rosen.   During the last 40-plus years Rosen has focused on his role as teacher (Bennington College 1960-1991) and maker of a unique\, evocative body of abstract ceramic sculptures rarely exhibiting or publishing his work. As a result\, his important body of abstract ceramic sculptures\, almost all of them untitled\, have been seen by few and his name has largely faded from the history books. This exhibition and accompanying catalog shines a much deserved light on an important body of work created between the late 1950s up to the last few years and seeks to reestablish Rosen as one of the leading lights of American ceramic art during the last six decades.\nBuy Local: Photographs from Weichert-Isselhardt Collection of glass plate negatives opens the 2017 Regional Artist gallery.  Bennington was changing rapidly at the turn of the 19th century and local photographers captured the people and landscape using negatives on thin plates of glass.  The Bennington Museum has recently acquired nearly 2\,000 glass plate negatives from this era that were held in the Weichert-Isselhardt Collection.  Many of the negatives in this collection were taken by Madison Watson (active in Bennington 1888-1899) and Wills T. White (active in Bennington 1899-1940).  The images on view celebrate shops and commerce found in Bennington during this period.\nOn view through March 19 is the Annual Student Art Show bringing artwork of the region’s elementary\, middle and high school students to the museum in a display ranging from whimsical projects by the young students to more advanced work of older students. Arranged by theme\, visitors can explore the artistic development of children in various mediums.

DESCRIPTION:The Story of Bennington County’s One-Room Schools.\nPresented by Beverly Petrelis.\nAda Paresky Education Center of the Bennington Museum.\nFree and Open to the Public. \n  \nOne-room schools were commonplace throughout Bennington County until the 1960s when the growing number of baby-boomers made them inefficient.  All students met in a single room where one teacher taught reading\, writing\, and arithmetic to several grades of children at the same time.  Many of these schools were heated with potbellied stoves during the winter and had no indoor plumbing.  While none of the original twenty-nine schoolhouses are in operation today\, many of them still exist throughout the area\, often repurposed as homes. \nJoin retired Bennington school teacher and Bennington Historical Society board member\, Beverly Petrelis\, as she tells the stories of some of these schools and the students who attended them.  She will focus especially on the years between 1930 and 1960 and through a series of photographs and personal anecdotes bring this bygone era to life once again.  All Bennington Historical Society Meetings are free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:From Beethoven to Bennington (and back again!)\nBennington Museum is pleased to begin the 2017 Music at the Museum concert series with “From Beethoven to Bennington (and back again!)”\, a performance by cellist Maxine Neuman and friends.   Included in the musical offering is Josef Bodin de Boismortier’s\, Duo in d\, Op. 14\, No. 3;  Ludwig van Beethoven’s  Sonatina (Op. post.); Allen Shawn’s Serenade (1990);   Lionel Nowak’s\,  Suite for Two Cellos (1980); and Beethoven’s Sonata in C Major\, Op. 102\, No. 1.  Sponsored by Alison Nowak and Robert Cane\, all concerts are free and open to the public.  Reservations are not required.  This first concert is on Sunday\, February 26 at 2:00 pm in the Ada Paresky Education Center and Paul Paresky Court of the Bennington Museum.  Admission to the galleries is not included. “The Museum is entering its third year of these wonderful concerts.  Having met with huge success\, you can look forward to enjoying high quality music for years to come\,” stated Deana Mallory\, Director of Public Programs. \nPerforming with cellist Maxine Neuman will be cellist Mark Humburg\, pianist Allen Shawn\, and pianist Elizabeth Wright. \n \nMaxine Neuman’s solo and chamber music career spans North America\, South America\, Europe and Japan. A grant recipient from the Rockefeller and Ford Foundations and the National Endowment for the Arts and a three-time Grammy Award winner\, her biography appears in “Who’s Who in the World.” She is a founding member of the Claremont Duo\, the Crescent String Quartet\, the Vermont Cello Quartet\, and the Walden Trio.  She has appeared as soloist before a sold-out audience in New York’s Town Hall in the American premiere of Giovanni Battista Viotti’s only cello concerto\, and has recorded Schumann Cello Concerto in Count Esterhazy’s historic palace in Austria. A longtime champion of contemporary music\, she has commissioned and premiered works by many of today’s leading composers.  Neuman is on the faculty at the New York’s School for Strings and Hoff-Barthelson Music School\, she has taught at Bennington College\, Williams College and C.W. Post University.  Her cello is a J.B.Guadagnini\, dating from 1772. \nBorn in New York City\, Mark Humburg started playing the cello at the age of 5.  He attended LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts\, winning the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s Young Artists Competition. He holds a performance degree from Mannes\, the New School for Music\, where he studied with Wolfram Koessel and Fred Sherry. In addition to Duo Cellissimo\, his current ensembles include Duo Ocado\, performing with guitarist Matthew Kaplan.  Mark shares his passion for performance and chamber music with a dedication to teaching. He is faculty at the Brooklyn Waldorf School\, the Harlem School of Music\, Suzuki on the Island\, and the Brooklyn College Preparatory Center.  An avid performer\, Mark has played in major venues across the US\, as well as overseas in Germany\, Holland and China. He plays on a Knopf cello made in 1900. \n \nComposer-pianist Allen Shawn grew up in New York City and moved to Vermont in 1985 to be on the faculty of Bennington College\, where he still teaches. His work list as of 2016 includes  five piano sonatas\, several pieces for piano four-hands and two pianos; chamber music; vocal music; a one-act children’s opera;a chamber opera composed to a libretto by his brother\, Wallace Shawn; and a dozen orchestral works including a Symphony\, two Piano Concertos\, a Violin Concerto\, and a Cello Concerto. In 1995 Shawn was the recipient of a Goddard Lieberson Fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters\, and in 2001 he received an Academy Award from the same institution. His recordings include numerous chamber works\, four volumes of piano music\, and his piano concerto performed by Ursula Oppens\, with the Albany Symphony.  Over the years he has composed many pieces for his friend cellist Maxine Neuman\, including the 1990 Serenade for cello and piano they will be performing at the Bennington Museum Concert. The two have also frequently recorded together\, and released a CD of Shawn’s cello music last year.  Shawn has also written four books: Arnold Schoenberg’s Journey\, which won the 2003 ASCAP Deems Taylor Award\, Wish I Could Be There\, Twin\, and Leonard Bernstein–An American Musician. \n \nElizabeth Wright\, Artist Associate in Piano at Williams College\, has performed extensively throughout the United States\, Europe\, the USSR and Japan. She has appeared in recital with many distinguished artists and was awarded the prize of Outstanding Accompanist at the Fourth International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow.  She is principal pianist with the American Symphony Orchestra and was for many years piano soloist for both the Martha Graham Dance Company and the Paul Taylor Dance Company. Wright has been an artist-teacher for the Lincoln Center Institute and has served on the faculties of the Mannes College of Music\, Bennington\, and Princeton. \n  \n  \n  \n

Modernist abstract painter Pat Adams states the following about her art\, “For sixty years I have approached painting with an empiricist’s concern for the nature of visual form and the intimist’s sensibility that addresses the layering complexity of being.  With abstract paintings characterized by seductive colors and richly encrusted surfaces\, I seek to bring from my “gatherum of quiddities” – that stew of unnamed qualities – a visual situation that bestirs contemplation.”  A fully illustrated catalogue with essays will be available from the Museum Store in mid-May. \nEnjoy Sculpture by Ceramic Artist Stanley Rosen\nHolding the Line: Ceramic Sculpture by Stanley Rosen features works by one of the most dynamic artists working in the medium of ceramics from the late 1950s to today.  By the late 1950s\, Stanley Rosen was in the vanguard of American ceramics. He was one of a small cohort—among them Peter Voulkos\, John Mason\, and Ken Price—who revolutionized ceramics\, making of it an inventive and richly expressi \nStanley Rosen (b. 1926) Untitled\, 1962\, RC 42 Unglazed stoneware\, 16 × 8 × 8 inches Courtesy of the Artist \nve art form\, freeing it  from the practical requirements of vessel making and the conventions of the craft tradition.   From 1960-1991 however\, Rosen focused on his role as teacher at Bennington College and maker\, rarely exhibiting or publishing his unique\, evocative body of abstract ceramic sculptures.  This exhibition and accompanying fully-illustrated catalog with essays and interviews establishes Rosen’s place among the masters of 20th- and 21st- century American ceramics.  Holding the Line: Ceramic Sculpture by Stanley Rosen displays a wide selection of his sculptures and drawings and will be on view through May 21.  This exhibition travels to Alfred Ceramic Art Museum at Alfred University to be on view there October 19 through December 30\, 2017. \nStepping into the Past\nBennington was changing rapidly at the turn of the 19th century and local photographers captured the people and landscape using negatives on thin plates of glass.  The Bennington Museum has acquired nearly 2\,000 glass plate negatives from this era that were held in the Weichert-Isselhardt Collection.  Most of the negatives in this collection were taken by Madison Watson (active in Bennington 1888-1899) and Wills T. White (active in Bennington 1899-1940).  When White retired he left the glass plate negatives in the attic above his former studio located in downtown Bennington.  The building also housed the Bennington Banner and in 1958 the negatives were found by Robert Weichert\, photographer for the Banner.   Weichert started collecting historic photographs and later hired Tordis Isselhardt to help organize the collection.  Upon Weichert’s death in 1983\, Isselhardt became custodian of this treasure trove of history.  All of these images are available on the Museum’s website\, but a selection will be on the walls in the Regional Artists’ Gallery of the Museum during the year. The first phase of this installation is titled Buy Local: Photographs from the Weichert-Isselhardt Collection.  This exhibition pays particular attention to the shops and commerce of Bennington.\nActivities inside and out\nThroughout the day\, hands-on activities for families will be available in the Moses Gallery and in the Schoolhouse. While exploring the creative displays\, several parents exchanged news of a trending social media topic involving a football betting site that pledged a portion of its proceeds to local arts programs. Felt boards and felt pieces will be available to create Moses-style artwork. From 10:00 to 12:00 noon\, try your hand at writing with quill and ink\, and from 1:00 to 4:00 pm celebrate spring by making tissue paper flowers. On the George Aiken Wildflower Trail\, the Children’s Sculpture Garden will make its debut. Jackie Marro\, co-chair of the trail\, will be available to welcome visitors. There will be stump pedestals and flat discs of wood for children and their families to create sculptures\, along with stones\, sticks\, pinecones\, and other natural materials. DESCRIPTION:June 3\, 2017\, 3:00 to 5:00 pm\nArtist’s Reception\, Works on Paper Gallery\nBetween Past and Future: Clemens Kalischer’s Vermont \n“I just watch very quietly. I tend to be very quiet. People hardly notice me . . . I tried to take totally candid photographs. When they feel that I am totally absorbed then they get totally absorbed.”  Clemens Kalischer \nBorn in Germany in 1921\, Clemens Kalischer fled with his family to France in 1933 and escaped to the United States in 1942.  A self-taught photographer\, the images that first made his reputation were photographs of fellow refugees arriving in New York after the war\, and graphic\, modernist evocations of streets and buildings. But Kalischer’s heart was not in the city\, and in 1951 he moved to Stockbridge\, Massachusetts.  Here he focused on creating photo essays of the people he had encountered in the rural and urban areas of India\, Israel\, Europe\, the American South\, as well as New England. \nClemens Kalischer (b.1921) Marlboro Music Festival: Van Cliburn and James Levine\, 1956 Silver Gelatin Print\, 11 x 14 inches © Clemens Kalischer Image courtesy of Images Gallery and Studio \nKalischer often came to Vermont seeking material and in this exhibition – Between Past and Future: Clemens Kalischer’s Vermont – the viewer is treated to over thirty images including some taken during six decades of photographing the Marlboro Music Festival with images of  Van Cliburn\, Rudolf Serkin\, Pablo Casals\, among others.  Many are from his Peacham series documenting people in their daily struggles on the land or in the factory.  His Vermont work is deep and varied\, comprising thousands of images traversing more than six decades\, and we are excited to share his work through this exhibition. \nHis work appears in the permanent collections of places such as the Library of Congress\, the International Center of Photography and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He has exhibited at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York City\, the Museum of the Jewish People in Tel Aviv\, and the site of the former Nordhausen concentration camp in Germany near where he grew up.   Between Past and Future: Clemens Kalischer’s Vermont is on view May 27 through September 4. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Music at the Museum - Appalachian Harvest
DESCRIPTION:Music at the Museum is pleased to present Appalachian Harvest\, featuring Big Stone Gap who is joined by Alyson Slack on the fiddle and Aaron Pacitti on guitar.  Members of Big Stone Gap include Dave Lawlor on the mandolin; Marc Edwards on guitar; Chris Fisher-Lockhead playing the viola; and Dave Cuite\, bass. \nJust as visual folk artists like Grandma Moses informed and influenced modern artists\, American folk music had its own impact on the future of music.  Appalachian Harvest will begin the concert with traditional anonymous American fiddle tunes and progress through the introduction of bluegrass which was pioneered by Bill Monroe. The performers will then draw from the Western Swing influences of Bob Wills and the correlation of swing and Dixieland as it became incorporated into Appalachian music. The program rounds out with more modern interpretations of the genre as it became more energized through the establishment of rock and roll. \nThe free concert is made possible by Alison Nowak and Robert Cane. Admission to the museum galleries is not included.

DESCRIPTION:When Laura Gilpin passed away in 1979 most of her negatives\, photographs\, and letters went to the permanent archive at the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth\, Texas. Three portfolios of photographs however were kept by her family. The Bennington Museum is fortunate to have this opportunity to share with the public a selection from these portfolios which include photographs by Gilpin herself as well as photographs given to Gilpin over her long career by friends and mentors\, including Clarence H. White and Gertrude Käsebier. This exhibition of remarkable photographs will be on view in the Works on Paper Gallery of Bennington Museum from October 7 to December 30. \nFrom 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on October 7\, join curator Jamie Franklin and Bennington College instructor Jonathan Kline for an opening reception of this remarkable exhibition.
