DESCRIPTION:Join the Bennington Museum Board of Trustees for our annual meeting where we will review all the successes of Bennington Museum in fiscal year 2026 that you have helped to make possible\, and discuss exciting projects slated for the coming year. \nAt this meeting\, which is open to members and non-members alike\, we will also be presenting the Arnold Ricks Award which is given to an individual or organization in recognition of exceptional contributions to the Bennington community and Bennington Museum. \nThis year we are pleased to honor Tom Dee\, recently retired President and Chief Executive Officer of Southwestern Vermont Health Care (SVHC).  Under his leadership\, the health system attained twelve consecutive years of positive operating performance\, became an institutional member of Dartmouth Health\, and received numerous state and national awards for quality of care\, community leadership and workplace excellence.  During his tenure\, Tom also made sure to give back to the community by directing SVMC’s philanthropic priorities in ways that made a local difference at Bennington Museum and beyond. He encouraged and helped lead economic development in Bennington through his involvement with the repurposing of the former Southern Vermont College campus and the renovations of the downtown Putnam building.  With his late wife\, Rita\, he committed countless hours of personal advocacy and volunteerism across many sectors including to equine and animal rescue efforts\, Catholic charities\, and the arts and culture. \n“Tom has stewarded a truly transformational change in the way the people of this area experience health care\,” says Martin Mahoney\, Executive Director. “But more than that\, he understands that a healthy community is built through strong partnerships. This exemplary vision has paved the way for organizations like ours to begin bold projects\, to make new connections\, and to dream bigger for the benefit of the entire region. SUMMARY:White's Stoneware\, Turned and Molded
DESCRIPTION:The White family produced salt-glazed stoneware in Utica starting with Noah White in 1838. In this presentation Fred Capozzella will discuss the history of that pottery from its founding through the end of stoneware production in 1907 and the final closing in 1910. He will also discuss the role of the Erie Canal and the canal system in the creation and success of White’s Utica. In addition to the illustrated presentation\, Fred will be bringing along examples of White’s Utica products from his personal collection. \nFred Capozzella is a retired educator from the Utica City School District. He is a collector of Utica (NY) related memorabilia\, with a focus on Utica stoneware. He has authored 22 regional books on history and true crime. For ten years he wrote a weekly history column on Adirondack Almanack\, the region’s award-winning and most popular online journal. He and his partner\, Jill Jones\, founded Bloated Toe Enterprises in 2004. They have published over 100 titles including 35 historical Adirondack reprints of vintage books. His book\, Oliver’s War: An Adirondack Rebel Battles the Rockefeller Fortune\, won the Adirondack Literary Award for Best Book of Nonfiction in 2008. SUMMARY:Civil War Quilts - More than needles\, thread and fabric
DESCRIPTION:Diana O’Brien remembers her Greek father\, a WW2 veteran\, asking her brother if he needed a handkerchief as her brother headed out the door to Vietnam in 1966. Aside from language issues\, her father had no words for the fear and love he felt for her brother. The handkerchief was his love letter. \nDuring the Civil War\, quilts made for soldiers were their own love letters\, but were also battleground and medical gear. Also\, they were ways\, mostly for mothers\, to express the angst in their hearts\, and pass the time\, until hopefully\, their loved ones returned home from the most human costly war in American history. \nDiana O’Brien\, a volunteer at the Ulysses S. Grant Cottage National Historic Landmark in Gansevoort\, New York and award-winning quilter\, will tell the unheralded story of Civil War quilts. Professionally made replica Civil War Quilts will be on display\, including a replica of the most famous of Civil War quilts\, the Jane Stickle quilt. SUMMARY:Left to Their Own Devices
DESCRIPTION:Part performance\, part interactive sound experience\, “Left to Their Own Devices” features a series of interactive musical mechanisms that invite and respond to audience interaction. Wander the Museum at your own pace\, in your own path\, and engage with the devices and performers. \nThe Devices\n \nTintinnalogia is a mechanical carillon fanned out around the new courtyard. The 8-bell device is inspired by the British tradition of change ringing\, in which permutations of bells are rung out in a frenzy. Every 15 minutes a piece is performed like clockwork. \nExtant is an immersive installation about celestial navigation amidst rising tides; it uses the sextant the artist’s grandfather used to sail to Tahiti. The sextant\, a navigation tool\, is based on imprecise science\, relying on where you thought you once were to predict your current position. As the audience uses the device\, a sound collage gradually loses itself\, as it tries to locate the viewer’s place. \nHeterodyne is inspired by the inventor Leon Theremin’s dance platform called the Terpsitone\, and his 1936 visit to Bennington to demonstrate the device. Heterodyne translates movement into sound\, tracking one person’s motion and mapping it onto a projected doppelganger\, using technology akin to the theremin\, the contactless instrument named for its inventor. \nComb is a work inspired by the silent instruments in the Museum’s Church Gallery. As the audience wanders the room\, lasers and sonar devices create a collage based on what the devices might have sounded like back then\, based on the shape-note hymn Evening Shade. \nIn Hypnagogia electric muscle stimulants create involuntary movements in three dancers\, conveyed through wireless belts. These tics are generated by the sound itself and are part of an improvisation between the intentional and the unexpected. Hypnagogia is a transitional state between sleep and wakefulness\, in which people experience hallucinations and uncontrolled tics. \nIn Barrel Roll a tiny device constructed out of a music box and a yoga block perceives movement. Playing with the trope of a music box twirling a porcelain ballerina\, each participant turns the barrel and creates a kaleidoscopic collage out of each tune. \nNicholas Brooke creates music across disciplines\, from collages of recordings with live theater\, to home-built instrumentariums inspired by gamelan. Brooke’s works have been featured across the U.S. and Europe\, at Mass MoCA\, HERE\, Merkin Hall\, Baryshnikov Arts Center\, the MATA Series\, and the Spoleto Festival\, and have been performed by the Bang-on-a-Can All-Stars\, Talujon\, Speculum Musicae\, Orchestra 2001\, the Paul Dresher Ensemble\, the Nash Ensemble of London\, and Sekar Anu. He has received Guggenheim and Rockefeller Foundation awards\, and multiple residencies including Djerassi\, MacDowell\, Bogliasco\, and Bellagio. Originally a clarinettist\, he is also an avid instrument builder\, and researcher of early musical automata. During a two-year fellowship to Central Java\, he studied gamelan and collaborated on musical projects with Javanese composers\, dancers\, and visual artists. He holds degrees in music composition and philosophy from Oberlin\, and a Ph.D from Princeton. Local police quickly arrested Cone Automatic machinist John Winters on suspicion of the crime\, and the trial that followed was sensational and swift. The author of Winters’ Time: A Secret Pledge\, a Severed Head\, and the Murder that Brought America’s Most Famous Lawyer to Vermont\, shares the story. \nJeffrey L. Amestoy\, the former Vermont Attorney General (1985-1997) and Chief Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court (1997-2004)\, has spent years researching a fascinating and dramatic episode of Vermont’s history: the time that Clarence Darrow\, America’s most famous lawyer\, came to Vermont to defend a convicted murderer before the Vermont Supreme Court. \nsupported by

DESCRIPTION:Take a tour of the Bennington Centre Cemetery with Bennington Museum curator\, Jamie Franklin.\nHave you ever wondered what stories lie in the cemetery behind the Old First Church? This guided tour starts in the Museum’s Early Vermont gallery\, where you’ll see the headstone for Jedidiah Dewey\, Bennington’s first pastor\, carved by Frederick Manning\, and learn about the earliest gravestones carved in Bennington. The tour continues in the Bennington Centre Cemetery\, where Jamie will share the stories of some of the people buried there and introduce you to the works of some of the region’s early headstone carvers. \nWear good walking shoes and be prepared for some uphill walking and uneven terrain. We recommend bringing water to drink and applying sunscreen and bug spray. \nTickets are $20 for Bennington Museum members\, $27 for Not-Yet-Members and available for purchase below. SUMMARY:Bridges of Bennington County
DESCRIPTION:a Bennington Historical Society presentation \nVermont is home to the third highest number of covered bridges in the United States\, after Pennsylvania and Ohio. If you look at the number per square mile\, Vermont ranks number one. There are five of them right here in Bennington County – three in Bennington alone! These bridges are part of Vermont’s identity\, captured in paintings\, the subject of ghost stories\, and part of many of our daily commutes. In this presentation\, local researchers will share what they know about our county’s beautiful and historic covered bridges. \nAvis Hayden lives in Sunderland\, on property that adjoins the Chiselville Covered Bridge. She has a curiosity about local history\, spurred on by her genealogical research involving Vermont residents. She holds a Certificate from Boston University in Genealogy. She volunteers at Bennington Museum’s Regional History Room and assists with projects at the Russell Collection (Arlington/Sunderland/Sandgate).   \nDavid Pilachowski has lived in Bennington for 25 years\, worked in college and university libraries\, and has long been interested in history. He volunteers in Bennington Museum’s Regional History Room (RHR) and is a Museum Trustee. He was one of several people involved for the past several years in reorganizing and cataloging the RHR collection. Through that work\, he became aware of Professor Louis Puffer’s remarkable collection of covered bridge materials and associated resources donated to the RHR. \nsupported by

The first sentence of the second paragraph from that declaration has become one of the most memorable and quoted lines in the English language: “We hold these truths to be self-evident\, that all men are created equal\, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights\, that among these are Life\, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” The last of the “unalienable Rights” listed ⎼”the pursuit of Happiness”⎼ has always seemed unusual and slightly out of place in this context\, though certainly not unwanted. What does the right to “the pursuit of Happiness” even mean then\, and now? Your $5 contributes to our annual year-end fundraising to support programming in the coming year. \nKids 17 and younger can get in free IF…\n…they bring an item to donate to this year’s Family Day Donation recipient\, Bennington County Coalition for the Homeless \nSuggested donation items include new and unopened: \nBackpacks\nEasy to make non-perishable foods (ex: instant noodles\, canned foods)\nCoffee\, tea\, sugar\, etc.\nPersonal hygiene products and toiletries (smaller travel sizes are often best)\nTowels and washcloths \nChildren’s Shopping Boutique\nNow accepting donations!\nNew and gently used items needed for the Children’s Shopping Boutique! Donations can be brought to Bennington Museum’s admissions desk any time the Museum is open. Items for men\, women\, children\, and pets accepted. We do not accept books for adults or clothing. \nItems in the sale are not priced higher than $15. \nWe also accept donations of gift bags\, wrapping paper\, small boxes\, tissue paper\, ribbon\, bows\, and batteries – especially AA\, AAA\, and LR44 Button Cells.. \nChildren’s Shopping Boutique\nChildren ages 5 to 12 are invited to browse the selection of new and gently used items\, all priced from $1 to $15\, with the assistance of our Shoppers’ Helpers. Adults help their children write out gift tags and set their shopping budget\, then hang back while the kids do the shopping. Gifts are wrapped before the children reunite with their grown-ups\, so everyone can be surprised when it’s time for gift exchange! Cash only\, please! \nReservations are highly recommended! Walk-ins will be accommodated as openings in the reservation schedule become available. \nReserve a Shopping Time\nBake Sale\nOur volunteers have been hard at work\, baking treats for you to enjoy while waiting for your shopper or to bring home. All items are available for a donation of your choice. Cash or Venmo only! \nVisit with Santa and Mrs. Claus\, 10:00 – 12:00\nSanta and Mrs. Claus will be in the Grandma Moses Schoolhouse from 10:00 – 12:00. There is no charge to visit with Santa! Remember to bring your camera! \nCraft Activities\, 10:00 – 2:00\nCraft activities will be available in the Bennington Pottery Gallery. Children can participate in three easy-to-make crafts\, celebrating the things that bring us joy. No additional charge. \nClassroom Creations\nEach year Bennington Museum invites elementary classrooms to work with a theme and create a work of art to donate to the Museum. Then we give our visitors a chance to take home one of these wonderful creations by purchasing chances to win for just $1 each. This year’s theme is The Pursuit of Happiness.

DESCRIPTION:250 years ago\, America declared its independence from Great Britain. The first sentence of the second paragraph from that declaration has become one of the most memorable and quoted lines in the English language:\n“We hold these truths to be self-evident\, that all men are created equal\, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights\, that among these are Life\, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” \nThe “Pursuit of Happiness” informs the theme of both the regional artist exhibit and the gala.  As we continue to strive and struggle to attain the ideals outlined for our country 250 years ago\, what does the “Pursuit of Happiness” look like to YOU today? We invite that to influence your choice of dress for this Gala\, which leaves for very open-ended fashion choices. Think 3 corner hats\,  yoga pants\, glitzy ball gowns\, colors of the flag\, or even more subversive gear is welcomed. We invite you to express yourself in a way that makes you HAPPY. \nSILENT AUCTION\nComing this Fall\, the Silent Auction features fun trips\, fine dining\, and fantastic goods from our regional businesses. Online bidding opens November 27 and will close on December 11. \nFinal in-person bids may be placed at the Gala. \nAUCTION ITEMS COMING THIS FALL

DESCRIPTION:Register and Learn More About the CourseBennington Museum 250th Half\nSaturday\, May 15\, 2027 \nThis 13.1 mile loop retraces the movement of John Stark and his troops from his headquarters at the Catamount Tavern prior to the Battle of Bennington. The Battle of Bennington was one of the most significant battles of the War and a moral victory that showed the Patriots that they could stand up to the British and German forces. \nThis is a certified half-marathon course and will be chip timed. \nAll funds raised from this race will benefit programming at Bennington Museum.
