Bob Keating, Young Care Giver

One of the themes in my work has been to represent the act of serving others. I worked for many years as a servant to people’s gardens. I developed a clear sense of being invisible to many of those I served. Being a visual artist and one who is physically engaged in making my own art I began introducing the subject of serving into my art as sculpture.

Young Care Giver displayed at The Bennington Museum is a perfect example; an awkward looking form of a person leaning in on a new patient who needs their help. They want to serve but don’t quite know how. They don’t know if their help will be received. Awkward compassion is written all over their form. My hope is people will recognize this common encounter here and elsewhere in their lives.

After all the server and the served are inseparable.
